People from other Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia refer to the Japanese language as 'Jap' i.e. do you speak Jap?

I had a friend who was Chinese, raised in Sumatra, who had no idea the term was offensive. I believe in this country it derives from the treatment of the Japanese during WW2, but I could be wrong.

Thanks girl. My Father who is Japanese does take great offense to that term and I never knew it until he explained it a few years back. It is more or less the Japanese who were around during thw WWII days who are sensitive about it. I can understand why people don't know that these days.... It would seem to make sense to be used as a nick.

Most of the Japanese and Asian people I know are fairly young, around my age or a little older 20~30s and they take offence also. Only one of them made reference to WW2, the other's said that anytime they have heard it, it was in a negative sense ment to harm someone. I had a Japanese ex-bf back in high school who would go into a mini-rage if he heard it.

Regardless of if the word it harmless or not... the fact that so many people use it for the wrong reason is enough to just not use it. I think people are worth other's biting their tongue. Would anyone really miss using the shortened word?

I don't even say 'jew' either, for the same reason. If even one person is insulted, I don't use it. That's just the way I see it.

Most of the people who complain about how they are being referred to are themselves among the worst offenders. Most Asian languages use horribly pejorative terms to refer to westerners in the course of every day speech. Heck, I'm not even quite sure what word in Cantonese I'd use to replace "White Devil". If someone says something it's the intent not the word that makes it insulting.
