Fletch XXX ---->
I don't know whether you'll be any help but as you are the only Mac guru I know I thought I'd take a shot in the dark.
I'm looking to try and emulate a Mac OS on my PC. I don't want the newest, flashiest Mac OS. I'm actually looking to run OS 7ish. So, I'd imagine you are wondering WHY I want to do this. Simple....I want to play Escape Velocity. :Graucho Once upon a time I had a Powerbook. I discovered EV and was hooked. Then one day I was particularly careless and accidentally spilled coke into the keyboard. Needless to say the poor little thing was never the same and eventually the battery died and the power adapter went on the fritz as well. Long story short, as I was mainly using a PC and only using the notebook to play EV, when it quit I chucked it. Once again I am feeling the pull of the Escape Velocity insanity. I NEED to play!!! I've downloaded a couple of the recommended emulators, and a Mac rom but I'm fucked if I can figure out how to make it all work together. I've tried reading the help files and they all assume you've got a Mac sitting next to you (although why you'd want to emulate a Mac if you've got one I'll never guess) and talk about floppy disks (do people still use those?) and all sorts of confusing shit. Can you help me? I'd be eternally greatful to you if you could assist me in finding yet another way for me to waste my time and melt my brain with video games.:thumbsup P.S. My apologies to anyone who thought this thread was gonna be about good old MJ as so many addressed to Fletch are. P.P.S. If there is anyone else besides Fletch who can help me, I will be just as equally greatful. |

thats all I could say. is dont if she really wants to do it, I guess it will have to be a hands on thing, the advice I say is to not even bother. As well as others in this thread... sorry I didnt feel like dumping a big story on why not. if you want to run a mac os buy a mac. i didnt think I was being an ass. heheheh |
oh i forget, you dont like me...

Bugger. Although you can tell I always try to find the MOST DIFFICULT way to do things. I hadn't even considered buying a cheap system on Ebay. It probably would be the best solution. Thanks mpegposter for the idea. Edit: I didn't think you were being an ass either, just honest. I know the old Flechster well enough to know he's only rude to assholes and I've always tried hard not to be one of those - well, at least with him. :winkwink: |

hehehe i too usually try to do difficult things, the easiest way. But the truth is that systems and OS' are such complex programs and structures, it can be done, but its very unstable in my opinion, and its just better to keep your os hardware compliant, I guess ya could say.
The mac os memory allocation and just overall true GUI gives Windows problems doing things, I cant explain why but it does. I dont think theres a real reason for an OS to be emulated, in that I mean, photoshop is available on both platforms, and a mac can open PC files, its just when you try to go the other way. Mac running PC is fine and easy, Pc running mac, it gets a bit heavy of a load for pc. :winkwink: |
you should be able to pick up a basic mac circa 97-98 for very cheap...

i got an old performa here i cant throw away.
I have it set up in one of my rooms running a black and white cam, i havent turned it on in months! :1orglaugh |

I've been looking at Ebay and yes there are lots available cheap but they are heavy mother fuckers and most people won't ship to the UK. I'll have to pick up my local ad paper and see if anyone has one for sale. |
heres a link to a web board about it.
if the game can be emulated successfully, my guess would be they might know. http://www.ambrosiasw.com/news/webboard/ scroll down until you see 'Escape Velocity Web Boards' :winkwink: |
maybe not hahaha
im doing searches on their board... http://www.ambrosiasw.com/webboard/F...ML/000170.html http://www.ambrosiasw.com/webboard/F...ML/000127.html 'buy a mac' is their advice hahaha mac owners dont want to help pc owners there either hahaha |

The ambrosia website is actually where I started and it seems that some people have managed to emulate successfully enough to play the game, although not much else. I got the idea of emulating from there but it just seems incredibly complicated.
Really I'm just being impatient. They are making the latest version of the game, Escape Velocity Nova, with a WinXP version. I just don't wanna wait.:) Thanks for everything guys. I'll either pick up a cheap machine locally or wait until EVN is released. |
