The end of the McMansion era is nigh

Say goodbye to the McMansion - Aug 2010

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The American home is shrinking. Toll the bell for the McMansion. "Home buyers are asking for less, cutting back on options and reducing square footage," said Steven Pace of the North Carolina-based Pace Development Group, which builds both custom and tract houses ranging in price from below $250,000 to more than $2 million.

"They're saying, 'Maybe we don't need that 5,000 square footage;" he said. "'Maybe our bath doesn't need to be big enough for our whole family and all our neighbors to take a shower at the same time.'" Kermit Baker, chief economist for the American Institute of Architects, pointed out that consumers don't ask for as much for spaces devoted to single purposes, such as media rooms for watching videos and game rooms for shooting pool. Instead, the requests are for rooms with shared uses. "We continue to move away from the 'McMansion' chapter of residential design," he said.

McMansions will soon be on the dollar menu

marketsmart 08-26-2010 03:19 PM

there is no shame in wanting a 5000-6000sq ft house..

just make sure you can afford it today and tomorrow... :2 cents:

The problem with McMansions are that most of them have builder grade features.

A 5,200 SF house is not supposed to have cheap cabinets and light fixtures from Home Depot.

It's like people that try to pimp out their Toyota Tercel with crap from JC Whitney. Curb feelers and lighted license plate frames and shit.

r.i.p. McMansion

I'm astounded by the McMansions that consume 90% of the lot size where houses are literally separated by six feet. What's the point of having the big house if you can't get the privacy to go with it? I rather have more land and less house.

Exactly. When I was a kid the only people who had big houses were people who had a lot of money. Most people, even those that made a pretty good living, lived in smaller houses that were more cost effective. Of course, this was back in the day when a lender wouldn't give you a mortgage unless you brought home at least three times what the mortgage payment was going to be. These days (at least before the bubble burst and everything collapsed) a person could get a load for a house where the mortgage payment took up nearly all of their income.

Yeah, too bad that I'm already buying a few of them for 20-30% of evaluation. Smart people make money during hard times and I'm so fuckin' smart that I make smart people look like retards.

;)

Reminds me of the show Arrested Development. I so miss that show.

There are much better deals out there than 20-30% off valuation. You need to look around a little harder and be willing to roll your sleeves up!

NaughtyRob 08-26-2010 06:12 PM

I'd rather have a smaller house and bigger yards.

Read my post if you can. If you cannot read it, have someone read it aloud to you.

I wrote that I am buying AT 20-30% of evaluation, NOT 20-30% OFF evaluation.

Thanks for looking and better luck next time!

Sally.

Wrongo, Boyo!

There is a bundle to be made in them if one buys like super right and then sells super right.

Yes, I am indeed profiting from the so-called "misfortune" of others; which "misfortune" for the most part, they created for themselves.

Mea Fucking Culpa!

Sally.

1. No need to look for bad news, it's everywhere you look.
2. Why do you consider this bad news? I don't.
