Always. I swing by and give them a new giant bag of dog food every time I can. Have two dogs that did time in the Maui shelter.

cherrylula 08-25-2010 07:16 AM

I've always wanted to volunteer but never have. Now maybe one day if I have the time. I donate though.

StinkyPink 08-25-2010 07:26 AM

I would but I am taking care of 2 dogs 5 cats and a bunny. My house is full.

Caligari 08-25-2010 07:33 AM

people have accused me of "walking the dog" for a long time;)

i used to do alot when i was in washington state, there was a great no kill shelter near seattle and and decent shelter near vancouver, bc i spent alot of time at. then i got my vet tech degree and volunteered at some south american shelters...pretty depressing.

i've read that the average career span for vet techs is around 5 years but apparently the demand has surged recently.

Currently I donate to Much Love Animal Rescue and Cat Depot Cat Sanctuary :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

One of our dogs is a rescue. I have myself listed as a volunteer to do home checks for a few rescues but so far haven't been tapped for that. I'd love to get more involved with some of our local dog rescues but the more you get involved the more I've been dissapointed with the way they run things. Someday I'd like to start my own.

Barefootsies 08-25-2010 08:58 AM

I see the Sarah Maclachlan commercials almost every night. So was just curious.

k0nr4d 08-25-2010 09:04 AM

I would gladly give them my cat as a donation.

John-ACWM 08-25-2010 09:35 AM

I don't have a local shelter but congrats to all of you doing it.

thickcash_amo 08-25-2010 09:36 AM

I have donated, volunteered and have a dog from a shelter.

Those damn abuse commercials make me cry so I have to turn the channel really quick. I find it disgusting how people can harm a helpless animal :(

Those commercials do their job, fucking bum me out bigtime. I can't watch them.

Those and the ones with David Ducovney, "I'm a good dog, I don't know why my owner abandoned me".

On the upside, they found out the identity of that bitch in england who put the cat in the trash can, charging her with animal cruelty. :thumbsup

there's something going on in south carolina now called bear baiting. they apparently remove the teeth and claws of a bear, chain it and lets dogs attack it for hours.

thought shit like this only happened in pakistan, but unfortunately not.
this is actually "legal" still in the us.

anyone interested in seeing more check out (no graphic photos) - you can contact reps to tell them to ban this shit-

I feed my dog everyday.

ottopottomouse 08-25-2010 10:40 AM

The local one is run by some really weird people. All the girls that work there are pleasant enough but the owners were really difficult to deal with.

It is my personal rule that, any time I happen across someone abusing an animal IRL, that person must endure a serious ass beating to recalibrate their thinking.

I tried to volunteer at Friends of Strays in St Pete but I just couldn't handle it. Too sad for me - all those animals that no one is ever going to adopt, sitting in cages day after day. So now I just give heavily to them and let others more strong-hearted than me do the work. A cop out - yes, but it's the best I can do.

Varius 08-25-2010 11:04 AM

Yes, we help out a dog shelter in Costa Rica with money (food, bowls, etc...) and our time (weekends).

I especially enjoy taking the larger dogs (great danes, pitbulls, dobermans, rotts, huskies, etc...) on hikes up the mountain, as they rarely get to go out as most ticos are afraid of them.

We also bathe them and are setting up some fundraising efforts.

Currently they have about 130 dogs and 8 volunteers.

TurboAngel 08-25-2010 11:07 AM

My g/f runs a no kill shelter and I drop off food and littler as much as I can.

Yep..we have fostered many dogs and also sheltered/rehabbed many medium size farm animals (mostly goats, pigs, ducks) and found placement for them.

It is a lot of work taking care of and nursing back to health sick animals but I get so much back in return.

WebairGerard 08-25-2010 12:15 PM

I do help our local animal shelter. they do great work and really need all the help they can get.

Deej 08-25-2010 12:18 PM

no... though if I did d offer my time and services ... or like AMP. dogfood... I would never donate money as most charities are just shams anyway. Unless I was involved or knew someone close I wouldnt trust any charity.

St Pete, FL? Where are you based out of?

SykkBoy 08-25-2010 01:27 PM

always
all of our animals, except the bird my fiancee has owned for 15 years, are rescue animals

we also donate used blankets, bedding, etc. for use at the local shelter and volunteer when we can to help out at the shelter

NetHorse 08-25-2010 01:28 PM

No, but I should.

damnage 08-25-2010 01:38 PM

Whenever I get the urge to donate, I think of the animals in those shelters, then I think of poor dying children dying around the world for lack of the most basic needs. To think of them dying means I could never in good faith give money to a animal when a child could use it so much more than a dog possibly could.

Not a knock on animals, just my opinion.

Same goes for volunteering my time. Ever since secondary school when I watched a documentary showing how many homeless people have mental disorders and other severe problems, they deserve my time more.

word, but offer your time :thumbsup

The homeless is a touchy subject... so many consider them worthless or garbage. Sure, some are just that, but the majority of people homeless got put there by other wrong doings. Most are mental. Some disabled. Its not that they just one day say hey I give up. Im going to beg now and starve daily.

Most often they either broke their back or lost their job or dont have the mental capacity to maintain a proper life and home.

Give a meal to these people when you can. You wont regret it.
