I ate sea urchin sushi last night for the first time

And I didn't like it. It was too slimy.

I'm game to try new stuff, but I had a feeling I was in trouble when the waitress was suggesting ways to eat it so that the taste was better disguised. A few of the people I was with liked it, but not me.

I did have this thing they called Dynamite which was scallops, shrimp, onions, mushrooms and a few other things all mixed into this one "loaf". It was very good.

TidalWave 08-17-2010 12:19 PM

i almost threw up when i tried it

PR_Glen 08-17-2010 12:21 PM

doesn't anyone order a steak anymore?

SykkBoy 08-17-2010 12:34 PM

I love sushi, but hate sea urchin...I'm always up for trying something new but it was one of the worst eating experience I've ever had...and I've even tried balut...

JBlack 08-17-2010 12:48 PM

That's a blobfish, and as far as I know, it is not edible.

I ate Japanese food with a friend on August 5, 2010.
The Japanese sea food was tasty.

That shit is nasty but Dynamite is usually decent. One of the better Dynamite's I've had in Portland is at Mio Sushi on 39th and Hawthorne.

Some of the best Sushi I have had anywhere in the world can be found at Saburo's.

I wouldn't even try sea urchin sushi...

JuicyAds2 08-17-2010 03:08 PM

Sea urchin, Uni, is one of Sonny's FAVES... ha ha! we always dare people to try it, and I always have to man up and eat it WITH them. It tastes like Sea World to me, and feels like the slime on the Sea World ground, that bleachy, algae-ish floaty film. BLECH! But yet I eat it everytime to prove my imaginary balls are bigger than most! ROFL!

Caligari 08-17-2010 03:10 PM

yep i love sushi but urchin is fairly disgusting. tried it once and that was one too many times.

Mio Sushi is where we went, but we went to the one on Hoyt. I had never been there, but really liked it. Good food, good atmosphere and they played The Beatles Revolver in full. :)

I'll have to try Saburo's. Thanks for the tip.

You might've had bad Uni. Good fresh Uni melts in your mouth, you don't even have to chew it. There is no fishy or slimy quality to it. It's one of the better choices on the menu.

Agreed, most people never taste truly fresh uni and it goes bad so quickly making it tough to turn people on to it.

Well, I'm not 100% sure. The waitress told us that it was fresh that morning and to look for it to be all yellow with not black spots to be sure it was fresh. Ours was, but then again, I really don't know for sure if that is just what she was saying or not.

How do you tell if it is fresh?

american pervert 08-17-2010 04:10 PM

yeah, you need to get it fresh. if you don't it's like fish jello. if you do get it fresh it tastes like almonds. if 15 years of eating sushi, i've only had it fresh 1x and that was at sushi nozwa (the sushi nazi) in studio city.

damnage 08-17-2010 04:13 PM

Fuck me.

I don't mind battered fish at the chippies or maybe even some calamari. Fuck eating all that raw shit.

P.s Swordfish is tasty as fuck. :)

Here's another tip...Get there early. Once they open they fill up fast and it's normal for the waiting line to extend out the door. We usually get on the list then go across the street for a drink or two while we wait.

so how did you like balut?

latin 08-17-2010 09:04 PM

sushi sucks

CunningStunt 08-18-2010 12:01 AM

Uni is delicious. It's the closest thing to eating a wet vagina, but with rice.

Go dive for the sea urchins yourself for the freshness win.

Raf1 08-18-2010 12:46 AM

I don't get why Sushi is so "trendy", lol.

Take off the blinkers and see.

You need to get out more and not be so fucking close minded.

suesheboy 08-18-2010 06:06 AM

Not my favorite, but when fresh I really like it.

Sadly, the past 5 years I spend little time in my house in Boca and most of the time in my house in the mountains so I don't get a change to have great Sushi every few days. So much for being the Sushi boy.

Chicks Delivery 08-18-2010 06:12 AM

Never tried yet, but I will....

Serial Pervert 08-18-2010 06:26 AM
