We?re No. 11!
We?re No. 11! - Aug 2010
aka "How To Understand American Decline" http://www.newsweek.com/content/news...1983729622.jpg [LINKHOTTED] Like the summer heat, fear of America?s impending decline is weighing on Washington these days. Has the United States lost its oomph as a superpower? Even President Obama isn?t immune from the gloom. ?Americans won?t settle for No. 2!? Obama shouted at one political rally in early August. How about No. 11? That?s where the U.S.A. ranks in NEWSWEEK?s list of the 100 best countries in the world, not even in the top 10. And as the worst recession since the ?30s festers on, along with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, no number of legislative triumphs?financial reform! health care!?seem capable of lifting the nation out of its doldrums. On any number of indicators, according to the NEWSWEEK list, the United States is not the worldbeater it was a decade ago. ?On economic fundamentals such as GDP growth, household consumption, industrial production, and trade, the U.S. was ahead on most metrics 10 years ago,? says James Manyika, director of the McKinsey Global Institute. Today, in contrast, America barely makes the top quartile, and it?s fallen to the bottom quartile in R&D. FULL ARTICLE :2 cents: It's good to be, errr.... 11th. :helpme |
Life isn't that bad. There will always be other places with perks and whatnot. The US is still a superpower and will always be one.

Yup, thats why we need to stop funding other countries and bring our troops home. Im sure we will claim back up that list pretty fast.
|
lists like these are a bit misleading... the factors they consider are somewhat arbitrary... like "gender gap" or "income inequality"? Factors like that are great as an academic exercise, but I'm not really sure if they have much of an effect "quality of life"...

If you don't like it, get the fuck out of my country, bitch!
AMERICA, FUCK YEAH! |
Canada is sometimes placed better than America in these lists. I also saw a speech by Barack Obama on Television. He said he thought about making the USA health care system closer Canada health care system.

If you read the full article, it paints a much better picture of the US than the two paragraphs you copied.

If you're not happy with #11, here's another list for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ccount_balance

The last one :D And most of that it owes to China...
|
I would have ranked the USA higher than #11 but probably not in the top #3.

11th is not so bad. :party-smi

I wouldn't like to move to USA even if they were paying me for it.
After watching Sicko and Fahrenheit 9/11 I have no doubts... USA sucks. |
11? That retroactively predicts the events of 9/11!

I couldn't imagine living in a country with such a screwed up health industry like the US ... i know my health insurance costs just going over for a few weeks are bad enough. |
Being number 11 is like being number one TWICE. We're number one, AND number one!

Look at the bright side, it's better than #12, and Iran is waaaaaaay down at #79. So there. :)

Plus, think of this... when they do the VH1 Top 100 Countries Countdown Special, we'll be the last feature spot right before the big commercial break leading into the final top 10.... that's primo real estate right there. (sort of)

Anyway, my two cents are... most people don't seem to realize what's happening. How much longer do you think national boundaries will last? You think the US cares about being in debt? Of course not. The world is too small nowadays, so what hurts the US, hurts countries all around the globe.
The US doesn't give a shit about its debt. It only cares about bringing all nations of the world under the same roof. Geez, some people are dense. |
