ICQ -- People adding you...
This is something I don't understand. I usually get say 3 - 5 people a week adding me to ICQ for (what seems like) legit reasons. I don't mean the Russian spam guys, but people who put legit and reasonable explanations as to why they're adding me.
Yet, many times I'm not online when they add me, and I'll never hear from them. Will try to contact them to see what they're looking for, but never get a response back. What's with that? Are people around here just REALLY impulsive and forgetful, or??? |
It has always been that way. Most you never hear from.
I guess ICQ is like a name dropping contest for some people. Which would put a lot of message board posts in context. At least for those who think that this industry is a popularity contest. :2 cents: |
I hate ICQ and wish we would all use Skype or just use e-mail. ICQ pisses me off everyday. When I have to add someone I have to delete a contact. I'm running out of people to delete as they are all active clients or friends. I get 50 Russians trying to add themselves daily. Lost messages and stupid ICQ ads flashing in your face all day.

If you go mainstream, people will say something like, "Ohhh, ICQ! Yeah, I remember that from about 6 years ago". |
True, but our business is built around this technology, so we just have to get used to it :P
|
It's possible they're sending you a message with a URL in it, which gets filtered. I don't require auth but ICQ still ignores/filters messages which contain URLs... and it's not consistent either, sometimes they get through, sometimes they don't. If I need to send someone new a message that contains a URL I'll send the message, and add that I'm going to send the URL separately in the next line.

Yep. It's only you adult dinosaurs that still use ICQ. You people are the only reason I use it.
Skype is what's up. The reason they don't get back to you is cause ICQ fucking sucks. By the time you hear back from someone you cant fucking remember yourself who they are or why you added them cause all you have is a damn number that's not attached to any other info. |
I think it is usually people just adding to the contact lists. So, either they can send a mass message and spam as most people as possible at one time with it or for if they ever need to talk to you in the future.
|
Happens all the time to me as well.
|
I just woke up, sat at le computer and sure enough, like pretty much every morning there were about half a dozen "so-and-so added you"'s waiting for me. Took me exactly 11.2 seconds to delete them.
It's been like that for many years now, I don't even think about it one way or the other any more, except for whenever someone posts a thread like this. |

I hope we stop using ICQ at some point in the future since it's clear that the guys who developed the technology are way behind these times.

I never understood why ICQ is so widely used in this industry anyways.. who the hell wants to use a bunch of random numbers as their username?

how is the alternative better? Nobody has original handles anymore anyway it has to be like diablo99103_coolthing7@emailprovider dot com in order to not be in 'current use' anyway. At least with Icq you can change it anytime you want. Or if its too baby like, which it is, you could just as easily use trillian. That's what works for me anyway. |
I get people trying to add me and when I ask them what they want, before adding them, they reply with something useless like I saw you and thought I would add you. They don't get added.
|
I stopped using ICQ (Adium) last year for good. Was down to 2 contacts in there, and was time to put it to rest. Fired it up once this year to see if it was still active... but that's it. It's an inefficient method of client communication, and very 90s. Zuzana hit it on the head.... it's time to move on to better things people. ICQ is a tool from the stone age. :2 cents:

And then there's the russian spammers.... not even getting started on that. |
Who else loves the copy and paste on ICQ! Not me cause shit is always too long to paste it in one conversation! I hate ICQ :(
|
I have ICQ for Mac and have no issues. I keep all adult on ICQ and keep my others on Trillion.
The Mac version of ICQ is clean with no adds. I do see how annoying the PC version of ICQ is. That would drive me nutz, having flashing banners in my face all day long. If i was on a PC, I would look for some kind of after market "something or other" that has a cleaner interface that is compatible with ICQ. |
Lets not kid ourselves. As shitty as ICQ is, we will all keep using it until they stop running the servers for it. You should all just suck it up and quit whining, as much as we all want to leave it we're stuck with it until AOL deems it unprofitable and shuts it down.
