puppy eating his own shit
I just busted my pup, eating his own shit!!!
Is this normal behavior for a puppy? and YES he had food right in front of him. What do I do for him to loose this behavior? Frankly, I almost threw up seeing that. |
easy solution: take puppy shit, put in puppy shit bag (or a regular garbage bag).
hard solution: ? i have no idea.. i don't have puppies. but a friend has a dog which craps in the house sometimes (can't hold it throughout the night, sucks). we just clean it up when we see it. |
dogs will do that all their lives... remember that next time he licks your face :glugglug

Yes but I was working, and was not aware he had taken a shit.
I took him out earlier 3 hours ago for a walk and he took a shit then so normally he wouldn't have taken a dump for at least 7 hours! damn, this puppy training is harder than rocket science! |
Yes, it is normal behavior. There isn't much you can do except not leave his shit around. Rabbits are also famous for this. There is a word (no, a real one, like a scientific term) for animals that eat their own excrement, but I can't remember what it is.

Seriously? So its not unhealthy? |
Its called Coprophagia
Girlfriends dog loves to eat his own shit at times as well. Its a diet problem. |
It's a common disease called Coprophagia.
Buy 'Deter' from your local pet shop. They are chewable tablets that you give the dog once daily. It puts MSG into their system and makes their poop smell funny and they wont eat it anymore. Worked for my dog. Good luck. |

Wont hurt the puppy at all. My younger dog, When she was a puppy she used to go in the cats litter box and eat cat shit. They just sense the nutrients or someshit.
|
Ok thanks alot guys.
Been really helpful. I guess I will go to the petstore "again" and get those pills 'deter'. Thanks again |
My dog does that when he's sick :(
Maybe you should go get him/her checked out :) |
|
wow, good to know that I'm not alone in this... my dog likes to rub his face in it though... territorial thing or something... and always right after we've given him a bath. lol

Found online....
A dog may eat feces simply because he is hungry and has no alternative source of food. The solution is simple. Try feeding him more and get him to a veterinarian for a check-up. A dog that is fed an inexpensive, generic dog food has to eat more of it in order to satisfy his nutrient requirements. Much of this food passes through the system undigested, leaving a stool that looks and smells much like what was originally eaten. Feeding a high quality food would solve this stool-eating problem. Dogs that are punished for having an accident in the house may eat their own stool as a way of hiking the evidence and avoiding the punishment. Punishment for doing something as natural as eliminating makes no sense at all. Housetrain him properly. A kennel or yard where feces are allowed to pile up may cause a dog to clean up his living space by eating his stools. Keep a dog?s living area clean! The emotional stress of being left alone or restricted to a small area for long periods of time without the companionship of the caregiver can result, for some dogs, in the eating of his own feces. Check with your veterinarian for internal parasites which may be leaching nutrients from your dog?s system, causing an unusual appetite. The way to eliminate this habit is to feed a complete and balanced diet, provide lots of exercise and playtime, keep the kennel or yard clean, avoid restricting him for long periods of time, and take him to your veterinarian for a health check-up. Your veterinarian may also be able to prescribe a chemical additive to his food which will make the stools taste terrible. There are products that can be applied directly to any animal?s stool which will discourage your dog from consuming it. |

lol, I hear you on that. My dog is about 5 pounds if that, and when he shits, its like a bomb that dropped. it stanks up the entire yard for about 5 - 10 mins. :1orglaugh |
I highly doubt you would notice the difference in odor; it's for the dog, not you.
Unless of course you are eating his shit which is probably the case. Quote:

Try switching their dog food to something else. I recommend anything that is organic. Anyhow, be careful, not to let your dog continue doing this, because it will start to cause health problems for them. :2 cents: |
Yes, puppy shit got a lot of calcium
give you doggy some calcium |
Kill him now. Its contagious I heard. My neighbor dog does the same thing and the whole family eats shit. Not the dog's though their own.

When my two 1 year olds were puppies , I took them out immediately after meals reward them when they poop outside and they learned quickly. If they messed in the house , I cleaned it up right away and haven't had any problems in fact they wine when they have to go out .

I forgot to add I take them out alot like 4 or 5 times now. You can imagine what it was like a year ago.

Damn, I thought that my dog was the only dog to eat his own shit. When winter comes, it's the worse, he waits for it to freeze, then he flips the turds around in the air, playing with them, then eventually, he'll chew them up and eat them, that's just nasty seeing it.

What kind of "shit eater" do you have? lol
|
Okay, this is easy to cure. Stop feeding him poop.
|
well its a "Shit"zu dog!
its the name of their breed. So I guess they weren't called "Shitzu" for no reason ? :1orglaugh |
many puppies eat shit, haven't you ever heard the term "shit eaters" reffering to puppies before?
I always thought they learned it from their mom because she eats their shit for a few weeks while they are weining. |
