Free alternative to Photoshop?
 

I often find myself setting up friend's computers. I'll set them up with various freeware programs. A photo editing program would be nice.

Can anyone recommend a free alternative to Photoshop?

Gimp if you want free free rather than *cough* free.

Well, I have a copy of Photoshop 7 that I'm not afraid to install anywhere but it appears to only support up to 16-bit color. Gradients look lousy if they aren't 24-bit or better.

Something that isn't web-based and supports layers would be simply wonderful :thumbsup Gimp looks interesting but doesn't say if it supports 24-bit color.

I installed Gimp and I'm impressed, although I can't find the download for the help files.

I'm using Paint.NET. It's freeware and supports layers. Don't know about colors.
