So Limbaugh Was Right About The Oil In The Gulf?

First off...I'm not starting this thread to begin a fight between "conservatives" and "liberal" here on GFY. I'm just saying what I have seen on the news:

I'm watching the news right now. And they are saying that almost all of the oil in the gulf is...GONE.

And they are saying that 25% of the oil has already been eaten by microbes and is gone completely.

The rest of it is in tiny, tiny diluted form and is being taken care of "naturally" as well!

This is EXACTLY what the news was reporting a month ago that Rush Limbaugh claimed and they were giving him hell for saying it!

Limbaugh said on his radio show that the oil was part of nature and that nature would take care of it.

Everybody (including me) thought he was full of shit. All the news organizations gave him hell.

Weird, today none of the news organizations have mentioned that Limbaugh was right after all. lol

that the oil is gone is bullshit. a popular meme right now but wholly false.

i'm sure fletch could give you a more realistic perspective.

That is actually true. Oil leaking from the earth's crust is not uncommon and there are microbes that eat it up, but it takes time and dispersants may inhibit the natural process.

                    It got me thinking...

Also yesterday on CNN they were talking about a BIGGER spill that took place in the Gulf of Mexico.

It happened in 1979 off the coast of Mexico. Well, I was 18 years old then. And I had never even HEARD of that spill! And I asked my Mom about it (she still lives in Fla. near Tampa where my whole family is), and she had never heard of it either!

I guess back in 1979 before 24 hour news organizations...that the oil company did the best they could (that oil well spewed into the ocean for TEN STRAIGHT MONTHS before they could stop it) and nature did the rest. And the general public never even noticed it.

I'm kinda wondering if the media knew all of this but didn't report it because the story of ecological DISASTER was so much better for ratings. I know it had me glued to the television and I was sure this was going to destroy the ocean.

The Earth doesn't care about us. The planet laughs at us and our worries.

There is absolutely NOTHING we could do to destroy the Earth. Do people actually think it's a far fetched idea that the planet at one time opened itself a fissure releasing a billion times more fossil fuels into the ocean during a cataclysmic event? Of course it has. It just sucks because we have to deal with it because we are "newbies" on this planet and for some reason we think we are important and can fix things. Wrong.

The only thing mankind can destroy is it's own species (along with the other plants and animals that happen to reside along side us). It will adjust, it will repair. We may be gone but the planet will keep on spinning.

Yeah, the leak in '79 was only 200 feet down too compared to the mile down the current leak is.

Sure, the oil is all gone now, and the water is perfectly clean again!

Tax breaks for the rich stimulate the economy.

Aspertane is a perfectly safe sugar substitute.

The war in Iraq will take 6 days tops, and shouldn't exceed $2 Billion.

George Bush was a great president.

                                            Porn is not desensitizing...

You name it - I believe it!

I remember seeing a show about the microbs eating the oil
They are starting the fishing back up and the FDA has cleared eating the fish they catch, but I have to wonder if this is just a way to make us forget about it
Carbon is not the problem, it makes up 0.041% of our atmosphere , 95% of that is from Volcanos and decomposing plants and stuff. So people in the US are responsible for 13% of the carbon in the atmosphere which 95% is not from Humans, like cars and trucks and stuff and they want to spend trillions to fix it while Solar Panel plants are powered by coal plants
                                                think about that

Maybe the microbes that are capable of eating the oil can't live in cold environments?

of course the planet isn't going to die due to the oil spill. who the fuck says that? straw man.

the fact is that fucked up tons of peoples lives, the economy and made peoples lives polluted and toxic.

that is reality. and a story in time and a rant from a drug addicted hypocrite doesn't change that.

We may be gone but the planet will keep on spinning.

hilarious but why you assume people only want to save the earth and don't care about their own existance is hilariously stupid.

You guys are going off on political rants here. lol

Nobody cares what I or any of you think about politics.

My main point was that I believe the media knew that the oil would be naturally taken care of...but didn't care to report it like that because they wanted ratings and money.

Not a big deal. I don't blame them one bit. I'd do that same exact thing.

I'm just relieved that things ARE going to get better in the gulf and it won't take "decades" to do it.

The media KNEW about the bigger leak in the Gulf from 1979 and KNEW that there were no long term effects that lasted "decades" but they just didn't bother telling us about it.

It was much better television to dramatize it and scare the shit out of me. lol

I know it had me glued to the television and I was sure this was going to destroy the ocean.
this clip talks about the spill you were mentioning in 1979. Interesting stuff.

The waters they fish in have been re-opened. But they interviewed them and the fishermen were saying that they are making more money working for BP cleaning the marshes than they would bringing fish to market. So for now they aren't going out.

50 million gallons is 4 times larger than Exxon Valdez, so its nothing to burp at, but I think the larger question is what happens in time...the oil from the Valdez is still being found because it is in coves and such with minimal water movement. Luckily the gulf is large enough to disperse more and hopefully continue to naturally evaporate or dissolve what is remaining. But do spill upon spill change ecosystems in the area? Nature can move in a very slow speed, we honestly have no idea the long term effects this will bring.

Weird, today none of the news organizations have mentioned that Limbaugh was right after all. lol

The waters they fish in have been re-opened. But they interviewed them and the fishermen were saying that they are making more money working for BP cleaning the marshes than they would bringing fish to market. So for now they aren't going out.
