Obama salutes promised end of US combat in Iraq

ATLANTA – Nearing a milestone in the long and divisive Iraq war, President Barack Obama on Monday hailed this month's planned withdrawal of all U.S. combat troops — "as promised and on schedule" — as a major success despite deep doubts about the Iraqis' ability to police and govern their country.

I'm waiting to see what Glenn Beck has to say about this important event before I make my official statement.

Amputate Your Head 08-02-2010 01:32 PM

"A transitional force of 50,000 troops will remain to train Iraqi security forces, conduct counterterrorism operations and provide security for ongoing U.S. civilian efforts. Under an agreement negotiated in 2008 with the Iraqis, all American troops are to be gone from Iraq by the end of next year. "

That's the end of 2011. Not the end of this month.

BestXXXPorn 08-02-2010 01:34 PM

Ummm... yeah I'd say he's pretty late and him bringing the troops home has nothing to do with him pushing for it and everything to do with the contract signed by Bush back in 2007...

That's not what I said at all douche bag... I'm tired of people on this forum putting words into other peoples' mouths...

Read it again ...where in there did I say anywhere that I even remotely liked Bush as a person or a president or that he was some kind of savior?

Now go fuck yourself.

The plan is for us to never NOT have troops there. They will just call them something other than combat troops.

I would think that it's a step in the right direction, but hardly makes up for the added troops he sent to Afghanistan, I wonder how many of the Iraq troops will get sent there?

Bush was also the guy who headed up that multi-trillion dollar stimulus package, but everyone lately seems to think Obama was behind it. They never want to give Bush credit.

It's funny how quickly people forget, Iraq was everyone's problem, not the fight in Afghanistan. Suddenly people are saying don't fight terrorism anywhere.

If your country had US troops on each side of your country like Iran does, would you be inclined to listen to the US?
It's a fucking mess over there and they need to just pull out, unless we can get oil or lithium, it's not worth just getting shot at, our troops can do that in Arizona on the border

Korea, Japan and Germany the TROOPS aren't getting shot at

Well for one, he said Aug 31st this year. Second during his campaign he said we would be out in 18 months. So thats lie number one.

Ha,
Lets see how many Americans are killed monthly AFTER the combat troops are gone!

ALL TROOPS weather they are Labled Combat, Cupport, What ever need to come home, and not sent out to Afgan. We have way to many problems here to be worried about other places, no matter who started the war for what reasons, or promises made.
Bring our guys home, take care of America!

WMDs? The establishment of a nice cozy little puppet government? Winning over the indigenous peoples? Burning billions of taxpayer $$? Rooting out evil from the nomad goat herders? "Defeating terrorism"?

what a complete waste everything connected to Iraq has been. :disgust

I like when people miss a point just to focus on one word. Brings so much to the conversation. Iraq in hindsight was completely pointless and sunk the US into another depression. Afghanistan you can argue for or against that war but there was at least some measure of reason to the fight.

Really? How many 9/11 terrorist came from Afghanistan?

I don't think I'm missing the point, I think you are.

The president says the United States isn't trying to turn into Afghanistan into what he calls a "model of Jeffersonian democracy." The goal, Obama tells CBS' "Sunday Morning" show, is to keep Afghanistan from returning to being a terrorist haven.

Looks like he is fighting a tactic. We can not even rid LA of gang violence yet somehow we are going to be able to change a whole political and religious culture of the entire region and Obama thinks that is a modest goal....

So what are the steps to make sure that we stop "Afghanistan from returning to being a terrorist haven"?
