That's bad ass. Props to them for grabbing life by the fucking testicles and doing it their way. Truly a success story. :thumbsup

Vendzilla 08-02-2010 12:24 PM

CIVMatt 08-02-2010 01:19 PM

is it true that its not considered gay if your more than 100 ft below the surface?

I did 5 months on a 65 foot sailboat when I was 19 - a tad different, I know, but I want to both do that and be 19 again!!!

Good for them! My favorite quote from the article is:
"I went to a Wal-Mart the first week we were back, and I had to come home and take a nap,"

i can hold my breath underwater in the jacuzzi for like 30 seconds

I don't know if this is true, just some story I heard, but they grabbed some guy that they found out he was gay, stuck him in an empty torpedo tube, then cycled the tube next to it, the guy had a heart attack and died

Another story In know is true, they can't shoot a body out of a torpedo tube, they tried to commit a body to the sea and when they shot him out, well they had to dry dock to clean up the mess. The pressure is just too much

Semi-Retired-Dave 08-02-2010 02:18 PM

That's insane, I've heard of home school but never Boat School

OY 08-02-2010 02:23 PM

Dave - My neighbors in LA left a year ago for a two year sailing trip in the South-Pacific with their two kids. Boat schooling all the way. That said, they did that from home before they left anyways, so I think it is "the kind of people".

That's insane, sounds like fun though.

child abuse.

Nice if you're a retired couple with an empty nest - but completely inappropriate if you have young kids IMHO. Where's their adolescent social development when the only people they can talk to is their own family?

acctman 08-02-2010 10:11 PM

wait, no sex for 7yrs? seriously was anyone fucking during these 7yrs at sea?

Their 22 year old daughter might be a virgin... and you'd sure hope their 18 year old one is!

That's assuming they didn't have holiday romances at each port... :helpme

Naechy 08-03-2010 06:01 AM

Raf1 08-03-2010 06:45 AM

I'm pretty sure that they didn't spend 7 years at sea the entire time. Chances are that they would be a sea for an month at most, arrive somewhere, stay for a while, then move on to the next port.

A great way for the kids to really see the world and experience different cultures as travelers, not tourists.

.:2 cents:

Actually, my wife and I have our sights set on a 47 foot catamaran trawler, and doing something similar.

Doug of Montreal 08-03-2010 09:27 AM

That's the dream, for sure. I think they usually call it retirement, though. For the sailing types, a couple of adventures where couples took off to trek around the world in catamarans.

Bumfuzzle

Slapdash

ottopottomouse 08-03-2010 09:36 AM

I don't think I could spend years on something as small as a boat without the other people driving me nuts and vice versa.

That sounds amazing.

And you are right, as it says in the article they would spend time on different islands, doing camping, hiking, learning about local customs and such. It seems their longest stretch was staying in New Zealand for 18 months. They said they would have stayed even longer but for paperwork difficulties.

They started out in the Caribbean, sailed through the Panama Canal, all over the South Pacific, Indian Ocean, back across the Atlantic...what an adventure!
