Standing While Working Pasrt 2 (Pics)

For those who were in my last thread about standing while working, I got my standing workstation build Friday afternoon, and JUST started to "break it in" about 4am this morning...

It's been almost 5 hours now and well, my back feels better then normal, but my fucking calves are killing me lol,

so far, 'office' style work is no prob at all, I'm able to email, browse and post on the boards with no problem, and from the best I can tell, it's not taking any longer then it would if I was sitting at my chair or "laying" on the couch.

Below are a few pics of my station, I added a removable 9 inch wide lip to the top (not pictured) to set my wireless mouse and keyboard on, and it also doubles as an arm rest

Also I removed all the stuff that is shown behind the 3 laptops (sorry as always I take photos then change shit again lol)

Right now I'm sitting on my ass with the wireless stuff, to give my legs a lil break lol

Any tips on how to further maximize my standing work, without killing my legs?

I like your room design. You could try with bungee cords to relax your legs.......

does poop drip down the back of your leg?

ottopottomouse 08-01-2010 06:42 AM

Have you considered a high barstool to give your legs a rest it makes you sit up straighter than in a chair?

I've been sitting while working 10-15 hours each day for the last 10 years and I'ts killing my back, I'm looking into the growing 'trend' of standing while working.

My other thread about this I mentioned a few of the news stories that have popped up in the last few weeks about the claims of "higher risk of heart attacks, and other problems"

so, I'm giving this whole standing shit a shot lol

and Agent: no lol, and EWWWWW

i once learned that a mix of sitting and standing would be best - i'd need a desk that could move up and down like 2 or 3 feet

Black Ops 08-01-2010 07:51 AM

They make ergo chairs that are not quite a full stand but raise you enough while giving your legs support.

TheSenator 08-01-2010 07:54 AM

I did the standing thing for awhile because of hemorrhoids.

Amputate Your Head 08-01-2010 08:07 AM

I gave the standing-while-working thing a lot of thought about 5 years ago (before it was cool, because I'm a fuckin' trendsetter), but decided I didn't want to commit my systems to a stand-up station only, and ended up sitting again. So instead, now I just get up every ten minutes.

but still, you should tweak the power settings on those monitors, no point in having 5 monitors on all the time... :2 cents:

That's what i do. Well ok not every 10mins but certainly much more often than i used to.

Instead of sitting for hours without hardly moving, i make sure i get up and do something which only takes a few mins and doesn't sidetrack me from what i was doing. Even if it's just something like going for a drink or a trip to the toilet...

rowan 08-01-2010 11:09 AM

My wife bought me a little fridge for my birthday a few years ago. She didn't understand why I didn't really want to use it. A short stroll to the kitchen is better than reaching over for a drink without even getting up...

I put a dart board in kitchen and leave some darts hanging off the edge of the fridge so it is pretty easy to throw a few for distraction/break time.

When my 2nd daughter was born I made the house non smoking, now my outside smoke breaks are about the only time I am not in front of the computers during work hours lol

I see you are color coordinating your sig to the jacket the chick in your avatar is wearing. Did the sig fashion police make you do that? :winkwink:

The pink clashed a bit so yes :)

@Loki
What I meant about the barstool was for carrying on using your high setup when you have been stood for a while. Obviously if you have spent a long time sat all day you aren't going to find it comfortable going straight to standing all day instead so the stool was for having a rest but remaining up straight rather than slouching like a lot of people do in a chair.

That's how I've done the desk in my new "shack" - since I'll probably be alternating between doing something at the desk, then installing or shelving it on the other side of the room. The desk can be used standing or sitting (on a taller bar stool)

Then again maybe repeatedly sitting down and getting up from a normal height desk would be good exercise. :winkwink:

pornguy 08-02-2010 05:36 AM

Not sure if I like the idea of it but Im sure its better for me.

Ahh, I get ya now :thumbsup

What I did yesterday for 'breaks' of standing was just to grab the wireless keyboard and mouse and sit down in my office chair, I do have some decent bar stools I'll try them out and see how they do.

I'm assuming you are talking about the two paintings in the top left of the photos?

Those are done by a client of mine, top one is called "Stove Pipe Monopoly" one below is "Peter's Key"

I think I have about 10 oh his paintings ranging from the small sizes like the two in the photos all the way up to a nice 5 foot X 4 foot giant in the bedroom.

Years ago I used to work at the phone company as a telephone operator. We had a few stand up positions. One of the chicks who used work there was fresh out of high school and was obviously a cheerleader there. She used to dance all around during and between calls doing her cheerleader moves in her tight jeans and it was sexy as hell!

dont they make desks that are adjustable height?

Drafting tables are adjustable. If I ever go to a standing station again, I'd use a drafting table & barstool combo. :2 cents:

Altheon 08-02-2010 09:52 AM

I was actually looking at getting one of those Anthro adjustable height desks. The sitting all day is messing up my back too.

stever 08-02-2010 10:55 AM

ive been working standing up for about 2 months now
and while it makes the hips feel great you need to get good shoes and as for the calves well that part comes with practice

Check this out

http://work-benches.apluswhs.com/ben...tanding-chair/

Allows the user to work in an upright, standing position while most of the weight rests on the padded seat, taking the load off the worker's legs and feet.

I'm pretty sure the point of working in internet porn is being able to sit on your fat ass 24/7. Get a different job

Loch 08-02-2010 03:56 PM

Loki, let me solve your problem!
I had an employee 6 or so years ago that had horrible back problems, we bought him one of these and within 2 weeks everything was solved

Your posture will be identical to standing up, basically sitting on your knees and bum :thumbsup

I had one of these when I was a teenager and although it felt really good when I first sat on it after a while I found it actually hurt my back... I stuck with it but was never really completely comfortable...

This.

But don't get lazy. Keep the barstool away until you need a rest.

If you can spend 75% of your day standing while working it will go a long way towards helping your back pain.
