Signature served up 37,000 times in less than 3 days!
So, I post on a few boards with my new sig and within a few days I notice it has been served up 36,000 times. Checking referer logs shows it being used on boards I cant even read! lol
I can see it now; tag line impressions for sale! |

nice.
its imagemagick right? |
the .jpg is really a script that pulls your ip, chops the domain and snags browser string and stuffs it into an image.

Sorry, had the grill going.... burgers, mmmmm.....
Okay, here's the deal, like they said, its a PHP script. That part was easy, getting the sign to be dynamic in size was a little harder and getting the nonproportional fonts to always center was a bit of a pain. Since the image is hosted off my server, whenever it is loaded from another one, I get the referring information and parse it apart. To make it appear as an image using a jpg tag, I use a rewrite on my server toredirect the request to the PHP script. I suppose to make it clean I should return a JPG to throw people off a little. I hadnt considered selling it. I was going to make it into a service where people could get a unique IMG tag to point to a sign with whatever text they wanted. Just for fun. I still have a little work to do on it - all in all about a days work. Oh, I dont use ImageMagick (system calls are too cumbersome) - I use GD. As for impressions, I was running an advertisment; its just a sig. ;) |

that would be cool on my site just have a copyright notice and URL back to your site in the code -- that they are NOT allowed to take out, part of the distribution license free advertising for you :) |
It's Easy to do. See :

HAHA, im using aol and it said :
You are using aol! Aol sucks! :1orglaugh |
Sure, Kevin; but now make the graphics nice and pretty.... Plus your img src'ing a php script - thats too obvious... Since your using internal fonts, I'd bet what you did took all of an hour or so.... Come on, man; put some effort into it! lol
What I did wasnt complicated - but you gotta admit, I was the first to do it this way. lol Yeah, I also added "Butterflies are Ghey" for msn.net users... |
Oh yeah.. Making it pretty is the hard part.. I mean Kudos to you fitnessphotos.. I don't have the patience with it (esp for no money hah no motivation)..
I think your sig looks great.. And yeah i'm using default fonts. Didn't want to make a mod_rewrite rule either (well i'm assuming that's what you did).. Yeah an hour is about right with the majority of time spent making it look pretty. I can only imagine the frustrations you had with fitting all crap in. best, - kevin kevinale (at) prontomail (dot) com |
Can you make it show a GPS map with the user's current position?
|
Cheers, Kevin! I got alot of flack from people saying I had too mcuh time on my hands and to drop the useless sig. I also got alot of PMs, IMs and emails wanting to know why I was posting their IP info in my sig (one person called me racist!). People didnt get that it was dynamic.
I'm thinking of making a signup page where you can enter some text and get a url like: imagename.jpg to post in your sig; then the script would use the imagename to lookup your custom text and place it in the sig. Who knows - I start alot of stuff like this and then never finish it. I even did an avatar with random text. Hey, maybe I'll give people the code in exchange for some clicks-thrus to my paysite! lol |

Exactly. The racist remark came from a guy with a Chinese name who had read me Smack down a friend of his in the past. He assumed that I had targeted him and his IP and that the pattern suggested I was racist and a bigotted.
Some people just dont get IT. |
