KABUL, Afghanistan ? NATO announced Friday that six more U.S. troops have died in Afghanistan, bringing the death toll for July to at least 66 and surpassing the previous month's record as the deadliest for American forces in the nearly 9-year-old war.

In Kabul, police fired weapons into the air to disperse a crowd of angry Afghans who shouted "death to America," hurled stones and set fire to two vehicles after an SUV, driven by U.S. contract employees, was involved in a traffic accident that killed four Afghans, according to the capital's criminal investigations chief, Abdul Ghaafar Sayedzada.

If you've ever seen the way the coalition forces drive in populated areas there, you'd understand the outrage. They tend to drive... Very fast.

Wow, and i thought the UK was getting pounded out there.

Think our count is just over 300 now since they went. What's the death toll of American troops ??

The day after we officially leave, and hand over security operation to the locals, the Taliban will be back in charge. Its a fact.

Racism aside that is a good point (yes I know you are trying to be an asshole). Obviously the strategy needs to be to maximize enemy casualties while minimizing collateral civilian casualties and US casualties. Focusing on US casualties alone does not tell you how well the war effort is going. It has to be considered withing the context of enemy casualties and strategic objectives.

The US lost 40,000 men in Normandy but the operation was generally considered a strategic success.

Does anybody have the slightest clue what the strategic objectives even are? Petraeus should get his shot... but man... not sure what anybody realistically hopes to gain at this point. Approaching 10 years and the tipping point is nowhere in sight.

The Russians killed 25% of the Afghan population only losing 10k men and still lost.

So how many do you think we need to kill to win? Do we need to kill that many in Iran and Pakistan as well?

bbobby86 07-31-2010 09:07 AM

To win the 'war on terror'? It will never happen. It's like the war on drugs, you can't win a war against an idea.

I'm still trying to figure how Obama got voted in when he said he was going to do this, I mena that was the biggest reason everyone hated Bush.
End the war, bring them home

Nobody paid attention to that really. The media didn't really give it much coverage, so you actually needed to be a somewhat active politico to hear much about it. Most people are not.

That stuck in mind, having a daughter in the Navy, it was the last thing I wanted to hear. People were just taken in by his charm and that he wasn't Bush, the facts meant very little.
