desktop computer - Acer vs Gateway?

Im looking to buy a new desktop and found an Acer and a Gateway for the same price and pretty much the same specs..

..which manufacturer is better?

pornguy 07-29-2010 09:48 AM

Dell.

:)

I know a guy with a couple Acers and has not had issues. Not sure about the gateways anymore.

Acer is horrible for Laptops but I'm not sure for Desktops. I've heard bad things about both companies actually. If you're able I still think you're better off building the system yourself with the exact components you need. This way you will know exactly what you're getting and you can make sure the components are quality and well integrated with the other components (no major bottlenecks).

If you're stuck on those 2 brands because of the price, then google customer support reviews for both of them. That's all it comes down to for me with a new PC. How much of a hassle will it be if it ends up being a POS

just tried this and it seems like they are equally shitty :Oh crap

datatank 07-29-2010 10:06 AM

sound like the worst two brands you could choose from

MrBottomTooth 07-29-2010 10:22 AM

They both suck. I have a couple Acer Revo's I use strictly as home theater PC's. Haven't had a problem with the first one, but the other one shipped to me with a dead ethernet port right out of the box.

They sure are inexpensive though.:winkwink:

martinsc 07-29-2010 10:29 AM

I wouldn't touch either one....

fatfoo 07-29-2010 10:37 AM

You say the laptops are same price and same specifications.
You can also look at other factors, such as:
1) Durability (how long will the laptop last without repairs)
2) Warranty or Guarantee
3) Return Policy (ex. return laptop for all money back within 30 days)
4) Privacy on laptop

bbobby86 07-29-2010 10:39 AM

i would chose acer...

Fat Panda 07-29-2010 10:45 AM

fuckem both

bloggerz 07-29-2010 10:47 AM

you get what you pay for with those two companies

digi 07-29-2010 11:10 AM

I have an HP now and it sucks balls... so what brand would you guys recommend?

Black Ops 07-29-2010 11:23 AM

One of my laptops is an Acer and it's been a little powerhouse for two years. No problems. I upped the RAM and it zings right along.

Go with something custom built from a place like ncix.com. Pick a base system then change it around to the parts you want using their pc builder.

Companies like HP ship their systems with junky proprietary power supplies half the time, and inadequate cooling. I swear that is why they are so unreliable. Then when they inevitably fail, you can't just go to a regular PC shop and switch it out with a standard power supply. (even if it hasn't already fried something else in your system)

Plus companies like NCIX don't load your system up with so much crap software right from the start. Their bloatware makes them run like shit, and half the time the stuff can't be uninstalled properly without breaking something.

If you are going to buy one of those two regardless of what we say then buy Acer.

Gateway always has and always will be terrible all the way around.

myneid 07-29-2010 11:54 AM

out of those two your only option for a decent machine is Apple

over38 07-29-2010 12:12 PM
