U.S. Declares iPhone Jailbreaking Legal, Over Apple?s Objections

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/201...-jailbreaking/

Quote:

Federal regulators lifted a cloud of uncertainty when they announced it was lawful to hack or ?jailbreak? an iPhone, declaring Monday there was ?no basis for copyright law to assist Apple in protecting its restrictive business model.?

Jailbreaking is hacking the phone?s OS to allow consumers to run any app on the phone they choose, including applications not authorized by Apple.

Once you buy it, it is no longer apples it is yours.

I would never have imagined it could be considered illegal, it's like saying you can't install linux on a windows machine.

I jail-broke my Iphone after 1-2 weeks since it gave me so much extra functionality and never had problems with dropped calls till the IOS4 was out. And I'm still an AT&T customer

I'd rather keep the warranty. :2 cents:

You ar not taking the phone apart so you do not loose the warranty, you can simply plug it up to your laptop and reinstall the original OS if it breaks :winkwink:

Hacking a phone sounds wrong.

It's about not allowing a monopoly on a major platform.

“When someone buys a kitchen blender, they don’t expect it to refuse to make a margarita,” Handel said in an interview. “And when they buy an iPhone, they don’t expect it to not run reasonable software.”

awesome, mac always has been a communistic monopoly run business, dunno why people gloat these things, people will flock to hype and Mac learned how to hype using a monopoly.. i guess the mac store is now gonna close.. now that you can legally run any software on it.. you can now sell it elsewhere without Apple enforcement.

Had some friends who created many games, and were top sellers in the store, only to have a 20 year old company make a new game which they were originators of but not in business, so Apple said FU to the top seller and removed software just so the originators could sell theirs and theirs only.. nice way to run a biz.. choose who your retailers are, kick everyone else to the curb as you see fit

Sorry Senator, total Fail.

This is an instance of a private company trying to get the government to use legal force to back a company policy.

Exactly the opposite of what you are saying. The Tea Party movement wants LESS government, and more fiscal responsibility.... exactly what this ruling provides.

Total Sarcasm Fail.

Please try again.
