Apparently they were expecting 800,000 people, but roughly 1.4 million turned up. Just one huge crush basically, in a small space...

Indeed, they should have known better.
They've been doing the love parade for many years, how the hell did they think using one tunnel for people to get to, and go from the closing party wasn't going to be a problem!? Seriously? Hundreds of thousands of people?

What a way to go man, my condolences.

loveparade death toll goes up to 20 as another girl (21 years old) died in a hospital today. that's so sad, especially when you see the organizers and the city of duisburg blaming each other - no one mans up and takes (at least part of) responsibility.
..what a shame.

Letting 1.5+ Million people into an event scaled for 250K with just one exit (same as the entrance) is a really really bad idea. So sad to see people die just from being squashed and overrun by a crowd. The police beat the people with sticks that tried to get out by overtrowing the fences locking them in...really sad.

The organizer let the people walk from the main station through the city to the goods station where the parade took place. They did it to sell their soft drinks and beer, like they did two years ago in Dortmund.

The old goods station has another entrance without a tunnel just near the main station. They used that one for the VIP area instead of using it to separate the entrance from the exit.

So the people had to walk through that tunnel which didn´t comply with the German rules for escape routes. The organizer even refused to open emergency exits while the people already have been seized with panic.

The situation was more or less similar to the one in Dortmund two yers ago, but they had a lot more room in Dortmund. About 180 metres width in Dortmund compared to less then 18 metres width in the tunnel in Duisburg.

They should hang the mayor as well as the organizer.
