Ten people were killed Saturday when chaos broke out at a music festival in Duisburg, Germany, police said.

It's unclear what sparked the mass panic at "Love Parade 2010" as people tried to enter the festival site in the early evening, police spokesman Werner Friese said.

Apparently they were expecting 800,000 people, but roughly 1.4 million turned up. Just one huge crush basically, in a small space...

Ugh damn...not the way 15 people thought they would go, getting crushed at the Love Parade. :(

Crazy. There were too many people. It's happened before, like football games, so they should have learned by now.

Indeed, they should have known better.
They've been doing the love parade for many years, how the hell did they think using one tunnel for people to get to, and go from the closing party wasn't going to be a problem!? Seriously? Hundreds of thousands of people?

What a way to go man, my condolences.

Officially the last ever Love Parade after those events.

They had no other option really. A shame it had to end in such a horrific way...

They canceled any future,a tragedy after so many years of success

final figures i read was 19 dead and over 300 injured (some severe) ... gotta feel love for the ones affected :( that party went terribly wrong :(

loveparade death toll goes up to 20 as another girl (21 years old) died in a hospital today. that's so sad, especially when you see the organizers and the city of duisburg blaming each other - no one mans up and takes (at least part of) responsibility.

Letting 1.5+ Million people into an event scaled for 250K with just one exit (same as the entrance) is a really really bad idea. So sad to see people die just from being squashed and overrun by a crowd. The police beat the people with sticks that tried to get out by overtrowing the fences locking them in...really sad.

The organizer let the people walk from the main station through the city to the goods station where the parade took place. They did it to sell their soft drinks and beer, like they did two years ago in Dortmund.

The old goods station has another entrance without a tunnel just near the main station. They used that one for the VIP area instead of using it to separate the entrance from the exit.

So the people had to walk through that tunnel which didn´t comply with the German rules for escape routes. The organizer even refused to open emergency exits while the people already have been seized with panic.

The situation was more or less similar to the one in Dortmund two yers ago, but they had a lot more room in Dortmund. About 180 metres width in Dortmund compared to less then 18 metres width in the tunnel in Duisburg.

They should hang the mayor as well as the organizer.:2 cents:
