India develops world's cheapest "laptop" at $35

India develops world's cheapest "laptop" at $35 - Jul 2010

NEW DELHI — India has come up with the world's cheapest "laptop," a touch-screen computing device that costs $35. India's Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal this week unveiled the low-cost computing device that is designed for students, saying his department had started talks with global manufacturers to start mass production. "We have reached a (developmental) stage that today, the motherboard, its chip, the processing, connectivity, all of them cumulatively cost around $35, including memory, display, everything," he told a news conference.

He said the touchscreen gadget was packed with Internet browsers, PDF reader and video conferencing facilities but its hardware was created with sufficient flexibility to incorporate new components according to user requirement. Sibal said the Linux based computing device was expected to be introduced to higher education institutions from 2011 but the aim was to drop the price further to $20 and ultimately to $10.

pornguy 07-23-2010 07:53 AM

Probably next to nothing. But then, that's not really any different than the people (slave labor) making Walmart's shit, or Apple's, or Nike's, etc....

John-ACWM 07-23-2010 08:42 AM

More like a 'once in a lifetime touch screen'.

Doubtful, but at $35 bucks or less it's cheaper than a carton of smokes and cheaper than most fill-ups at the pump. People could literally buy a new one once a week and not have to plan & save & scrimp for a new computer just to get online. This is huge.

Vendzilla 07-23-2010 09:11 AM

This is in response to Obamanomics, this is what we all will be able to afford in the coming years

I agree. A $35 computer? Everyone can afford that for what is it. It's like selling a car for $500 - everyone would buy one.

ottopottomouse 07-23-2010 09:21 AM

You're all assuming the price would travel.

Tata Nano price in India $2200
Tata Nano price in Europe $6000

Yeah, and way concerned that a billion more people who can now afford these cars in India will cut into the gas supply raising prices worldwide. :upsidedow

If everyone in India swapped their moped for a car I don't think there would be enough room on the roads for them to drive anywhere.

Exactly what I thought, no way it would be that cheap in the west.

UnUnited 07-23-2010 01:04 PM

I wouldn't say this is too far away from the USA or Canada , I just bought a lexmark printer with a scanner for $32 dollars and it works better then a $400 HP printer that was bought 1 year ago. The price of some small net books are already around the $200-300 mark. With everything switching to online applications and cloud computing, I would think a price under $100 is defiantly achievable for a device that needs to get online to do simple tasks.

gmr324 07-23-2010 02:07 PM

I can just picture these laptops stacked up in Walymart. Still don't think I saw anything on the laptop specs here

Konkan 07-23-2010 02:34 PM

And now everybody will have laptop in this fucked up world.......go India go

PornMD 07-23-2010 02:41 PM

Not TOO much of a surprise...phones are already more or less given away to get people on data plans...could see laptops being the same.

seoguyzzz ([email protected]) is cheater!!! Do not order SEO from him if you are not prepared to lose your money!
Due to the price he ask the work really must be done manually and with guaranteed result, but not using the submitter program.
At the beginning of our communication seoguyzzz agreed with everything, we had a concrete deal.
I ordered his services as he promised to provide a report not just a list of sites where he posted my links, but list of pages where my links are placed. This is why I paid him 210 USD, but the result which I got from the seoguyzzz the other companies offer for 18 USD. And this result is not what we deal. I think that the seoguyzzz is cheater, he promise one thing, the make something completely different and then say the he misunderstood the task. It seems like he just resells the services of other company, but promises everything what buyer would like to hear. So work is not done as we deal and for my request to give my money back I was refused.

The things seoguyzzz offers for 210 USD here - http://www.wlmarketing.com/directory...n-service.html costs 18 USD.
