India develops world's cheapest "laptop" at $35 - Jul 2010

NEW DELHI — India has come up with the world's cheapest "laptop," a touch-screen computing device that costs $35. India's Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal this week unveiled the low-cost computing device that is designed for students, saying his department had started talks with global manufacturers to start mass production. "We have reached a (developmental) stage that today, the motherboard, its chip, the processing, connectivity, all of them cumulatively cost around $35, including memory, display, everything," he told a news conference.

He said the touchscreen gadget was packed with Internet browsers, PDF reader and video conferencing facilities but its hardware was created with sufficient flexibility to incorporate new components according to user requirement. Sibal said the Linux based computing device was expected to be introduced to higher education institutions from 2011 but the aim was to drop the price further to $20 and ultimately to $10.

Doubtful, but at $35 bucks or less it's cheaper than a carton of smokes and cheaper than most fill-ups at the pump. People could literally buy a new one once a week and not have to plan & save & scrimp for a new computer just to get online. This is huge.

I agree. A $35 computer? Everyone can afford that for what is it. It's like selling a car for $500 - everyone would buy one.

Exactly what I thought, no way it would be that cheap in the west.

I wouldn't say this is too far away from the USA or Canada , I just bought a lexmark printer with a scanner for $32 dollars and it works better then a $400 HP printer that was bought 1 year ago. The price of some small net books are already around the $200-300 mark. With everything switching to online applications and cloud computing, I would think a price under $100 is defiantly achievable for a device that needs to get online to do simple tasks.

I can just picture these laptops stacked up in Walymart. Still don't think I saw anything on the laptop specs here

Not TOO much of a surprise...phones are already more or less given away to get people on data plans...could see laptops being the same.
