How To: Defeat The Taser In Combat & Survive

Alright.... in my other thread I told you how to avoid police taserings & death.
In this one, we will assume taser action has initiated, and we will examine how to defeat a taser in combat and survive to take out your opponent.

How To: Defeat The Taser In Combat & Survive - Jul 2010

1. A moving target is hard to hit.
Moving straight towards or away from the threat gives the appearance that you are standing still and makes you relatively easy to hit. If you can move laterally from the threat, you will be much harder to hit. Stay focused, stay moving.

2. Know the effective range of the weapon.
The law enforcement model, has a maximum effective range of 25 feet and fires a 5-second cycle, while the civilian model, has a maximum effective range of 15 feet and fires a 30-second cycle. If you can position yourself outside the effective range of the weapon, you can avoid being hit.

3. Full incapacitation versus localized pain.
If you are ambushed by a person armed with a taser at close range and you do not have time to move far enough back to avoid the reach of the weapon, remember that the smaller the spread of the two prongs, the fewer muscle groups are disrupted. As a last option, you can move quickly towards the threat to limit the spread of the prongs. You must be prepared to control the person?s taser to prevent a drive stun, while you neutralize the threat.

4. Face the threat.
If you are hit, you need to concentrate on breaking the wires or removing a probe with your hand before you fall to the ground. You will have limited ability to move your arms, so focus on making a sweeping motion with your lower arm and rip the wires away from your body. This would be extremely hard to do if you are shot in the back by the probes. National Geographic has an excellent series called ?Fight Science?. A recent episode featured former Navy Seal, Chris Caracci, attempting to defeat the taser. Caracci had previously been exposed to the taser, so he knew exactly what to expect. In the experiment, Caracci takes a few minutes to mentally prepare himself before taking the hit. In real life, you are going to be pumped full of adrenaline and you will not need to get psyched up.

5. Ride the lightning in a training environment.
If you have never taken a voluntary exposure with the taser, then good luck. As you try to deal with this new sensation, your OODA loop is going to be violently disrupted. While having been exposed before is no guarantee of success, it does give you a better understanding of what to expect and can give you a slight edge. Surviving a taser situation is all about playing the odds and setting them in your favor as much as possible. If you know what to expect, you will be better prepared mentally to deal with the situation.

6. Understand how tasers work.
A taser works by shocking you with a very high voltage, low current series of shocks. As a result, the diversion of even a small amount of current through anything but your body "hogs" the available current, lowering the voltage effectively to zero. Unlike house current, the voltage is applied between the two probes and not between either probe and ground. If you held one probe in your hand, you would simply force that side to zero voltage, while the other goes to full voltage over ground, with no current flowing.

7. Wear taser-proof gear, aka: How to make a cheap taser-proof vest:
A taser-proof vest is simply any ordinary vest with aluminum window screen or any other electrically conductive material sewn to the outside so the vest keeps the wires off your skin. You would probably then want to sew a shirt to it to conceal the protective layer so police don't just aim the taser elsewhere like a gun at someone in body armor.
As a result, there is no way for good, solid contact between the probes and your metallic layer to give you a worse shock, unlike, say, a lamp cord. This makes the vest safe to use.

As your enemy fires the taser at you, the darts pierce your clothing, and possibly your skin. The attached wires then deliver that low current, high voltage shock. When you are wearing taser-proof gear however, those probes must pass between the wires of the screen and probably will touch them directly, causing all the current to pass through the screen and none through your body. Even if one probe somehow manages to pass perfectly between the screen wires, it will take very little voltage to jump such a tiny gap. Too low to give you anything like a normal taser jolt. You might still feel that, but it won't take you down. In any event, using two layers of screen will prevent that.

Above all else, adopt a survival mindset. Know that you will not die and refuse to lose the engagement. Even if you are incapacitated by the taser, prep your mind to continue fighting as soon as you regain the physical ability to do it. In all cases of a determined person, after the juice is stopped the recovery can be instantaneous. Be prepared to resume combat and strike as soon as the juice stops.

Are we going to see a thread soon from Amp that says, "I was tasered by the POLICE!!"

Nope. I follow my own rules and take my own advice.
