35k a year living in Toronto is poverty. I lived there for 6 months and my condo was $1600 a month alone. Great place to live tho, I had an absolute ball when I was there.

fris 07-20-2010 04:33 AM

If you have problems to find your developer, we definitely can help you for not really more than what you expect to pay, with less headache than managing your staff :)

Bip me if you want more details !

Haha Fris - we should both panhandle. Mock the wage all you want, i'd rather hire low then hire abroad. With that said, serious inquiries only ;)

amateurcanada 07-20-2010 01:42 PM

Haha Ross - you don't want to know what it costs to get a simple office on the FRINGE of downtown. Might have to move in! :D

fris 07-20-2010 02:02 PM

if you find a developer willing to work for 35k i will eat my hat, you could prob find someone in india to do it, and im not knocking indians, they do fine work for less.

Huggles 07-22-2010 12:01 PM

35k for a mid level PHP developer?

....hahahahahahahaha.

NaughtyRob 07-22-2010 12:20 PM

Bump for you.

Loch 07-22-2010 12:26 PM

You guys laugh but there are TONS of mid level programmers working and willing to work for money like that!

Im in Vancouver and could have 25 people applying within a few days easy.

EDIT: Mid level PHP programmer today has little or no more status then a Banner designer

amateurcanada 07-22-2010 08:47 PM

Loch - I know. Its a fair opening wage for people here in Toronto, we are saturated much like the west coast with tech staff.

Chosen 07-23-2010 03:03 AM

Good luck finding the right people :)

Love that.

When in Montreal we post a job offer, even when it's competitive, we wait until we find the right person, that will fit with other dev, that will think like you :P, that his personality will be good... If we hire every cv that we receive, ouch the result.

I actually do, we had an office on Yonge and East Gerrard St. Very simple office and it was expensive due to location.

Like I said man, I lived downtown Toronto for 6 months, cost of living is big, but if you can afford it you will have an amazing time. I really miss Toronto, coming back up for a visit soon to hit all my fav clubs again.

You will get a lot of response even at this salary range. Tons of people out of work and tons of kids out of school looking for their first job.

My last office was at Bathurst/Adelaide and rent was over $3k a month.. I would have much preferred to have grabbed a unit in one of those high rises around the Skydome for $1,600 a month and had a kitchen and access to the amenities downstairs, and 100mbit internet.. But we had too many people at the time for it to be comfortable.

However the social skills to be a bartender don't usually fit the programmer persona ;-)

Well depend on bar,if you working in big bar like disco and similar, then you dont do anything else except standing on one place all the time and take money for drink. You dont even need to go to tables then.

amateurcanada 07-23-2010 07:27 PM

Haha - We did get alot of responses, i'm glad i'm a developer myself as to train someone to what I need to take on a different role with this company soliciting most of you! Nothing more of a killjoy when you film all day then have to patch your own screwed up php code until the sun rises.

So no bottle service for me - I drink boxed wine, its cheaper per literage hahaha.
