Well I highly doubt anyone gives a shit about the 456,976 4-letter .rw domains for instance given probably about 456,500 of them are available to register, so it's assumed that the OP was asking about just .com or they'd say across all extensions, plus they made no mention of 3rd-level extensions like a .co.uk or .co.in which would open it up for even more, not to mention "extensions" like .uk.com. The answer may as well be infinite in that case.
