Anyone have a good cooling tray or something to go under your laptop?

Tired of how hot my laptop gets on my lap or the desk even. Where can I get a good cooling tray?

I'm actually using one of these under my 17 macbookpro right now cause one of my internal fans failed a couple days ago and I'm encoding video and don't have time to stop and fix it... LOL.

It actually works great, laptop pegged out for the last 4 days strait doing the encoding and my temps 108F to 153F loud as fuck though.

Is that right side up or upside down? I'm having trouble deciding if the 1/2 inch upwards angled walls would serve good to direct the exhaust up and away or if the tray should be upside down so there are no walls and the heat can continue flowing outwards away from the laptop without any conflict.

If you want it for your lap remember that anything with active cooling such as fans etc is actually creating MORE heat, it may be cooling the lappy but not necessarily your legs

LongBG 07-17-2010 01:52 AM

Fuck I hate when fans die.

CunningStunt 07-17-2010 01:54 AM

I used 2 bits of wood, works perfectly.

gmr324 07-17-2010 09:09 AM

I have been using a Targus double fan cooling tray and pretty much keep it on 24/7 during the hot (90+) weather here in Boston. Have no complaints about it, it's sleek and not bulky.

weird, maybe they dont have these in the US (?) but we use them on our laptops and they work brilliantly for about 5 hours. then the cooling beads break down and u have to use a cold one.

Damn, I like this one the most. Not having to plug any extra wires in is a huge plus.

I put large 1/2" Self-Stick rubber pads on the bottom my laptop. Keeps it high for better cooling and dry if you spill and drinks around it. About $2

that's actually a good idea..

I have two 17" laptops that i use daily. One is 4 or 5 years old and the 2nd i just bought last fall. The older one would always get hot so on my desk i had two bottle caps propping up the laptop and when i use that laptop on a tv tray in the living room I would just let a quarter of the left side of the laptop hang off for cooling and to allow room to use the mouse on the right. My newer one never gets too hot and is faster and 3gigs of ram.

Yeah but you don't get the 2 sodas for free!

Actually I have it propped up 3in in the back on my desk, it is a bit cooler but still gets hot because it's just hot air trapped under there being sucked up.

The desk thing isn't really a problem, it's just the lap use that is unbearable.

beerptrol 07-17-2010 09:13 PM

I make the gf stand and fan my laptop with a piece of cardboard. Keeps the laptop cool and her arms flab free
