The era of cheap Chinese goods may be ending
Factory workers demanding better wages and working conditions are hastening the eventual end of an era of cheap costs that helped make southern coastal China the world's factory floor.
A series of strikes over the past two months have been a rude wakeup call for the many foreign companies that depend on China's low costs to compete overseas, from makers of Christmas trees to manufacturers of gadgets like the iPad. its a double edged sword for them. they want higher wages. sure ok but that also means that people won't be buying as much and will be looking elsewhere to manufactor them.
|
and china is letting the artificially low value of the 'dollar' rise as well
|
don't worry... there are plenty of 3rd world companies that we can exploit and abuse their people..
the only thing that was so appealing about china is that being a communist country, they could keep the media from seeing the working conditions... :thumbsup . |
Notice there's no mention of an kind of quality or safety increase...
|
don't worry there are parts of the US now like a third world country they can just move the jobs there.
|
Not really a bad thing. It opens a whole can of worms, but certainly not all bad. The closer third world wages come to Western wages, the less low-skilled Western workers have to compete with underpaid foreign workers. Furthermore, the more goods we can sell them of our own (meaning more jobs in the West). Despite the proliferation of cheap chinese goods, I don't think our standards of living have really increased as a whole in the past 20 years.
Long term they will inevitably rise, and their country will hopefully not need to be so exploitative to compete. We will just use Indian and then African slaves for a bit until their countries catch up too. |
I watched a TV program about making t-shirts. When China got too expensive to do it they just moved production to somewhere weird like Venezuela.

I order from DealExtreme at least once per week. Love that site. Never had any issues. If something is missing from the order, just let them know and they'll send you a few to replace the one you didn't get.
Doesn't matter if Chinese workers want more money, they'll just start outsourcing MORE to Taiwan, Vietnam and Cambodia, which they already do. |
