Do You Believe The US Is The Greatest Country On Earth?

Yes or No? - Why or Why Not?

Please discuss....

crazytrini85 07-08-2010 03:02 PM

It depends on how you define "greatest."

The problem with most Americans is they will say the USA is the greatest country on earth, yet they have never been outside of it.

Unless you are truly well traveled and spent a lot of time in other places on the planet, not just on holiday, then you are not able to accurately say what place is the greatest.

PornMD 07-08-2010 03:10 PM

Probably not, and more importantly I really don't give a shit if we are. People who have lived nowhere but the country they live who think their country is the greatest are like kids whose parents indoctrinate them into a religion.

DateDoc 07-08-2010 03:18 PM

I have travelled to lots of countries and lived in England for a long time before moving to the US. I think there are more opportunities for people in the US. If you bust your ass and work hard there is no limit to what you can accomplish.

TeenCat 07-08-2010 03:21 PM

the bestest, yeeaah, for sure, the biggest, of course, nobody is better ... oh, wait, who?

kane 07-08-2010 03:22 PM

I guess it is all relative. If you are someone who wants to work you ass off and try hard to make something of yourself this is a great country to live in. If you are someone who wants to sit around all day and live off the system there are probably better countries out there for that type of life.

if you can live with a bad "image" - sure, go to the US ... HEY! this is NOT about the ppl in the US! been there in 2003 and the folks were all extremely polite --- but, ever since bush (even before) the US has a bad image in europe (from what buddies say) ... sneaky question: can you remember a year in which the US was NOT involved in some kind of war or "military conflict" after WW2?

xentech 07-08-2010 05:13 PM

There can be no overall greatest country. Countries are good for different reasons.

Haven't you heard? Obama is now president and has fixed all that.

He spent the first year going around the world apologizing to everybody for all the bad things the US has done in the past and hell, just for being who we are. Our image is better then its been in quite some time.

Some things have changed for the better.

Konkan 07-08-2010 06:15 PM

US is great country, no doubts at all. Even I am not American citizen I had great experiences in the US. But what about China ??? If that country slowly overtake the world as US did does it means that everybody will learn Chinese and all the PC programs will run on some Chinese OS or........you can imagine what will happened then. :upsidedow

Question? Did you all bring spoons for after this circle jerk or ... ya just bending over and let you tongues do the work?

That is all ..

If you define the greatest country as being the richest most powerful country the world has ever known...then I would say yes it is.

If you define the greatest country as being the most geographically diverse then once again I would say yes it is...at least compared to the 15 or so countries I have been in or am aware of.

A person can sit at their computer and do enough research to easily decide what they feel is the greatest country on earth without ever leaving the house. You don't have to experience it to form an opinion. You can make that decision based on the experience of other people.

Because it's the land of opportunity under a democracy that allows us many freedoms I think the USA is the greatest country on earth but it's real close to losing that position.

ErectMedia 07-08-2010 06:36 PM

I have never left the US so I couldn't say and even if I did leave the US I don't think a short vacation would be enough time to see if you really dig a place or not as anything new is cool for a while but then wears off as it becomes normal.

My parents were from Chicago and they moved to Florida and now even though the beaches are right down the road they haven't gone in years. Lot of countries I would like to check out but unless you spend a significant amount of time somewhere doubt you can form a good opinion of it as I don't ever recall a bad vacation as just being on vacation tips the scale to a positive experience. Lot of people dying to come here so it must be one of the best places to make something of yourself, but I have never left, yet anyway.

Do you have a clue what the GDP in America is? Do you have a clue what the National debt for America is? China hold about 8% of the US public debt. US GDP is almost 2 times that of China. I think it would take more than 800bln to own America.

That said, I find American society and government more oppressive than anywhere I have lived. The American way of life isn't the same as it was 30 years ago. I will probably never live in the US again.

baddog 07-08-2010 07:01 PM

It beats anywhere I have visited and every immigrant I have ever met has told me it is, so I have to vote yes.

cykoe6 07-08-2010 07:27 PM

The large US GDP is based on there relation ship with China whom they have borrowed well over 800 billion from so is a ying yang thing. If the Chinese call in the debt the US can't afford to buy there shit and China suffers so they are ok with loaning them the $ and letting it earn interest. So GDP has got nothing to do with the US being rich as your whole economy is bank rolled by China and the Saudi's.
Also any country that borrows money to pay interest on national debts owing to other countries is truly a house of cards.

Then that wouldn't be your opinion would it? Your opinion of other countries are based on that persons experiences not your own. My question would be this ... What if the guy your studying is an asshole and in the countries he went to was treated different because of that ... so in his arrogance he writes that country 'x' is stupid. You being sloth like thinks this is fact as not having left your house his opinion is all you can go by does this really count then a real formed opinion? Opinions are ones own and cannot be formed from someone else's.

But alas this attitude is common with most americans I come across. Its not there fault as this is the culture in which your raised narrow focus on your own kind so as not to question your country if attacked you just sign up and do as told.

That being said I think these past 8 years of war have opened many young american eyes and they are realizing the rest of the world really doesn't like them based on the attitudes they were raised on.
I have many American friends and I love traveling in the states and have never had any issues with contact I have had with the many yanks i've come across.

Mark Twain said once " An American is a kind giving person loyal and trust worthy .. but .. Americans are a sorry bunch that regress to backwards views and leave their intelligence behind when confronted with a problem."

BV 07-08-2010 08:10 PM

Depends where in this country you live.

Parts of this country are worse than some other countries and visa versa.

Here's what I meant.

I don't have to visit North Korea before I can decide if it's better or worse than the USA because there is enough accurate information documented by others who's credibility I respect for me to form my conclusion.

For the same reason.....

I don't have to visit Iraq or Iran.

I don't have to visit Somalia or any other African country.

I don't have to visit any country in Central America.

I don't have to visit Cuba or Haiti.

Those are just a few of the obvious ones.

By process of elimination you can narrow it down to only a handful of countries that can go up against the USA as the greatest country. You can do that with the information available on your computer.

Thinking that you would have to actually visit the country to determine if it's better or worse than the USA is just plain stupid.

MaDalton 07-09-2010 07:48 AM

i have been to many countries and none of them was perfect. that said i'd put the US in my Top 5, but i am seriously concerned by those gun wielding, religious nut cases among the republicans and tea baggers. this is not the America i like

Define "greatest".

Major (Tom) 07-09-2010 09:01 AM

I've been around the world and each country has its good and its bad.
I think worrying about our country being the best like we did during the cold war is becoming somewhat of an antiquated notion. I love it here, and for the most part, I'm very happy with it.
duke

CDSmith 07-09-2010 09:29 AM

"Greatest" is very subjective.

Most powerful? I'd say the US is definitely that. And they definitely have the best network of highways in the world, those interstates are fantastic to drive on. And like it or not they're the most able country over the past 100 years or more to police the world. Who do you think stopped the pirates raiding ships off the coast of Africa? Good ol US of A, that's who. So if these are the criteria then yes, absolutely I'd say the US is the greatest country on Earth.

But greatest period, for everything? There are several countries who are consistantly rated with a higher standard of living (Canada being one of them), several countries with a longer lifespan among it's population (Canada being one of them), so depending on what criteria you're looking at there are several contenders to choose from.

In the end I'd say most countries of the world are pretty great, each having something about them that they can boast being the greatest in. Take Italy, for one example... long and very rich flamboyant history, hot women, amazing food, decent standard of living, once had one of history's greatest empires, always a contender in most world sporting events, etc. Sounds pretty great to me.

Special_K 07-09-2010 09:39 AM

Confucius say America not best country on earth but next to best country on earth.

(no not Mexico!)

What a ridiculous question anyway. Seriously....

There is a very small amount of truth in your post...but you are wrong about what the U.S. GDP is based upon. The amount of the National Debt owed to foreign countries is a relatively small percentage of the National Debt.

The U.S. economy is in a weaker state than it was at its peak...but the U.S. is still...by far...the richest country on the earth.

Question is all about belief which is really going to be a mixture of brainwashing telling you your own country is great and the potential immigrant Dick Whittington style streets are paved with gold idea that it will be better than where you came from.

Whether it really is The Greatest Country On Earth. Nobody can answer that properly until they have been everywhere and even then it will be personal to them.

Take your ignorant statement, that you wrote online. Now image if you based your experiences based on other peoples comments who may be making comments as ignorant as yours. Wouldn't learn much would ya? :2 cents:

wig 07-09-2010 11:18 AM

I agree with others who stated there is no greatest country. To each their own.

That said, two things that I think are great about US are:

1) The founding fathers were smart enough to realize that they were not smart enough to know exactly how a country should be run. Therefore, they set it up so that the people could experiment. As a system, different things could be tried to see what works, throw out what doesn't and retain what does.

2) They were smart enough to separate religion from government.

i'm not so sure if you're the richest and most powerful country the world has ever known, you are currently, but there's been plenty throughout history that would have been just as rich and powerful in their time, roman empire, british empire etc.
