Marijuana prices drop by 80% in California! $650million+ Taxes!

If Prop19 passes ...

Marijuana prices drop by 80% in California!
State tax revenues range from $650 million to $1.49 billion!

"The Santa Monica-based, nonprofit research institute predicted the cost of marijuana, which runs between $300 and $450 per ounce, could plunge to about $38 by eliminating the expense of compensating suppliers for the challenges of operating in the black market."

38 an O....:thumbsup

stickyfingerz 07-07-2010 12:14 PM

Will be interesting to see if the prices go down to the rest of the country.

Phoenix 07-07-2010 12:16 PM

thats a big drop...better to keep a high price...200 an ounce or something

then you force people to buy 1/4 or 1/8th

which is more realistic to say buying a case of beer

BFT3K 07-07-2010 12:20 PM

I'm not in Cali, and I don't even pretend to know how any of this works, so I am basically just talking out of my ass, but...

If the growers were paid $50 p/ounce by the retailers, and then the retailers marked it up to $100 p/ounce, and then the state added an additional $200 an ounce in taxes, the cost would be $300. I think most people would happily pay $300 p/ounce for legal weed.

This would still allow the growers and sellers to do well, while making the state a FORTUNE in new taxes!

BTW, here in the northeast good weed actually costs between $400 and $600 and ounce. For $300 you can get low end junk at best....

punker barbie 07-07-2010 12:21 PM

id be high as a kite 24-7 if prices dropped that much

LeRoy 07-07-2010 12:25 PM

Yah right..

Never.. Schwag maybe but no kush

Not that i'd know :upsidedow but that sounds a bit pricey. Are they buying the most expensive 1/8 on the planet and multiplying it up?

JD 07-07-2010 12:52 PM

wow 38/an ounce and I'd be a happy happy man :)

Agreed. It is difficult to find an eighth at that price, much less an oz.

Currently, yes of course.

But, say one is legally allowed to setup a HUGE "warehouse" operation in the middle of the desert (like Palmdale or Lancaster), with see-through roofing to make use of natural light, plus digital indoor gear to supplement for year-round indoor hydro growth, powered by "green" wind turbines, solar, etc. ... one could produce 10,000's of pounds annually at extremely little cost.

_Richard_ 07-07-2010 02:15 PM

400 per ounce? laced with gold or what?

Isnt that what they do in mexico now?

milambur 07-07-2010 02:21 PM

They grow cannabis (hemp) for rope and I doubt they charge $38 per ounce for rope. The manufacturing cost with legal cannabis production is extremely low. My guess would be below $10 per pound from farm. Current tobacco prices from farms are $2.50-$3 per pound in the US, in Africa you can get it below $1 per kg.

In California if a proposition gets at least 50% of the public's vote it doesn't need the governor's signature. (Some propositions require 2/3rd's vote, but again the governor cannot prevent the law from going into effect.)

mineistaken 07-07-2010 02:21 PM

this would turn them into pothead state. you can get more taxes but did someone count what would the sate lose with lower productivity of work class people?

I can see that happening. They would have to lower prices drastically otherwise people would just buy a clone and grown their own.

Maybe, but cost of transportation, risk, lost product, etc. gets factored in ... and also I'm not sure if Mexico focuses on the BOMB indoor hydro vs settling to get decent outdoor schwag at best.

bufferover 07-07-2010 03:44 PM

It's time to make the weed legal :rasta

kristin 07-07-2010 03:44 PM

BTW, you might want to take a look at prop 19. There is nothing there that would allow that to happen.

Spunky 07-07-2010 04:44 PM

Cheap reefer for everybody!

dyna mo 07-07-2010 04:48 PM

there's no way i can see the price going lower by any noticeable amount. + this:

Based on a statewide $50 per ounce tax proposed in a legalization bill introduced by Sen. Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco), the report said state tax revenues could range from $650 million to $1.49 billion.

$50 an oz tax! wow. that report makes some big assumptions and seems somewhat biased toward anti-weed/drugs.

Jakez 07-07-2010 05:02 PM

Any price under $400/oz is a great deal, especially for that name brand shit. Damn I wish I lived in Cali.

No shit dumbass, my scenario was pressed on your statement of "Agreed. It is difficult to find an eighth at that price, much less an oz. " ... I was explaining how if "legalized" ... and not just by means of Prop19, which more or less decriminalizes, then your difficulties wouldn't be so much of reality.

You're the only idiot. "Chronic" isn't even a strain worth mention ... go back to the 90's

dynastoned 07-07-2010 08:57 PM

you can't even make profit @ 38 dollars an ounce i don't see how you could even offer it that cheap. i call shens.

you have to take into factor electricity bills, water, nutrients, soil, clones, etc... outdoor maybe but even then it's not going to be as good as prime time indoor nugs which 80% of potheads want.

Fuck - it cost that much in labor just to properly manicure an oz of decent bud. Even in an outdoor grow on state and federal land (where much of the Cali weed is grown) the cost is higher than that by at least 3 times. A decent greenhouse grow of top-notch KB - with no pesticides or seeds (can you say a lot of fucking work) and average yield cost the grower around $200 an oz - there is no fucking way that KB will ever drop to $38 and oz.

I'll pay the price for good ganja and you can buy the moldy, pesticide riddled crap a grower would part with for a fraction of what it cost him to grow.

Depending on where you are from - "Chronic" is used to describe any good seedless bud - and is not a reference to the strain "Chronic" - in fact, in some locals, "Chronic" refers to cocaine laced bud so be careful what you ask for..... :)
