Anyone Canadian that flies to the US

well here is the problem, we are 4 going tot he convention, and the thing is that 3 of us are ok (we got all the required ID to go) but the fourth person doesn't have a Passport or Birth Certificat...

I called Air Canada, and they said that she needs to bring her Drivers License with photo ID and SS# CArd and Medicare CArd ( Goverment issued card). So ok they say that. But before the 9/11 my sister and her husband and 2 years old daughter was going to Florida, and her husband forgot his Birth Certificate, they wouldn't let him get on the plane until someone faxed in the Birth Certificate. So is Air Canada full of shit, or was it that maybe it was a random thing that happen to my brother inlaw?

And we are leaving tomorrow, and YES i told everyone what they needed, and the fourth person just told me she didn't have the Birth Certificate...

So what is your tough?

McAttack 01-03-2003 03:36 PM

Well if you can get some confirmation from AC on this, a written authorization or something. You MIGHT have an argument and they'd let you through, but they shouldn't give you any probs with lots of ID.

But seriously, no Birth Certificate? Make sure you go EXTRA early to the airport with this person, explain that you're bringing everybody for a convention is Vegas, blah blah blah. Don't try to go last minute and hope they'll say "Ah ok just go" cause that doesn't work.

Last time I had a friend fly to the US without all those papers was before 9/11

Rilose 01-03-2003 03:40 PM

they are fucking dicks right now..trust me i go back and forth all year long and they still hassle me with proper id..they will probably give you a hard time so bring whatever you can.

GTS Mark 01-03-2003 03:42 PM

Call immigration canada and see if you can get an emergency passport. That is what I did one time when I was flying internationally and I lost my passport.

After 4pm on friday, it's over. You have to wait until monday morning.

Emergency passport? Naahh.. It takes around 3-4 weeks to receive it normally.. I think if it's urgent, it will take less than a week.. a couple of days maybe.. forget about the passport. Also, you need a birth certificate for the passport, so you are fucked anyway.

Proof of Canadian citizenship
For persons born in Canada, you must provide either your:

Birth certificate (issued by the province or territory of birth) or
Certificate of Canadian Citizenship

For persons born outside Canada, you must provide one of the four citizenship documents below:

Certificate of Canadian Citizenship

Certificate of Naturalization

Certificate of Retention of Canadian Citizenship

Certificate of Registration of Birth Abroad

Would a Provincial MP work?

Socks 01-03-2003 04:45 PM

You could have gotten a new birth certificate printed the same day mang, bad timing.. :/

I wish you luck!

WiredGuy 01-03-2003 04:46 PM

For my first convention I didn't have a passport (this is post-911) but drivers license and medicare and I still had to show them birth certificate. Crossing the border from Canada you MUST have Passport OR birth certificate and minimum 1 photo ID with you. I would say air canada is full of shit telling you photo ID's are enough.

gregtx 01-03-2003 04:54 PM

damn... Ask Steve from LIghtspeed how hard it was to get back to the US after the Montreal show...

you are pretty much fucked unless you can find an emergency passport office...

:(

WiredGuy 01-03-2003 04:55 PM

I also wanted to add that you can get a birth certificate via overnight carrier for about $50. I had to do this and it was very quick and I had no problems with 2 photo ID's. Assuming of course your friend is Canadian born...

I don't know how much help a provincial mp will be for a passport seeing as it's a federal document; maybe they could help you with a birth certificate because it's provincial. Just remember that it's harder to get a birth certificate nowadays. You need 'respected and upstanding' members of the community that you know to vouche for you(signed document) such as your doctor, a minister/priest or a judge.

Ok, there's one other option you might have. My friend once lost his passport about 4 days before he had to go to Cayman Islands and he couldn't get a replacement in time since he's not from Canada. What he did was contacted the police HQ in your city and ask for their (I think) immigration clearance department/officer. Essentially what they do for a fee (no clue how much) is look thru your photo ID's, SIN, drivers license, etc... and check your criminal record and run it for security checks. Assuming she has no criminal record, the police department will issue a certificate that states that your not a security risk and have cleared Canadian security checks. It might not be enough but this is one step closer to what US Immigration is looking for.

But in all due honesty, I would say your friend is screwed until monday at the least. I hope you have a late night flight where immigration lines are short, otherwise the officer will reject you and kick you out right away.

dacash 01-03-2003 05:28 PM

well Passport i kno is out of the Question, the only other hope is if we can find her Birth Certificate, and i have been Talking to my local MLA, with a couple phone call i got his private home number :) let me tell you, he is not the sharpest tool in the shed... But he will try to do somehting for me!

So Thank you very much to everyone for all the help i'll keep you posted on my hunt!

NetRodent 01-03-2003 05:36 PM

Your friend is most likely screwed but she might get lucky. I'd advise making every effort to obtain the required documents (or as much proof of identity as possible) but even if she can't get them, she should still try to fly. Even post 9/11 I've driven into the US without having to show my passport. The conversation with the border guard usually goes something like: "Where do you live? Where are you going? How long? Have a nice day..."

dacash 01-03-2003 05:49 PM

I know how they are, we have some chance on our side, we don't wear towel on are head, we don't look like where form the mild east and it's only Halifax Airpot...

I found out something, that out of the 10 people i called tonight regarding this, 9 of 10 was very helpful , only 1 was a fucking bitch or asshole, i don't know if it was a Male or female or evena Trannie...

Well i got a couple numbers to call tomorrow, and that person is turning her place upside down to see if she would be lucky and find it...

ok now time to pray!

dacash 01-03-2003 06:13 PM

Well all is good! damn i just got a call from George bush.... nah i got a call sayign that she has a Old passport from 1998 and a photo copie that her mom found of the birth certificate of the whole family. If that isn't enought well they can GFY

THANK YOU AGAIN everyone and see you in Vegas!

PaulSweet 01-03-2003 07:10 PM

I certainly wouldn't cross the border without at least the Birth Certificate and a Drivers License....

If they actually let your 4th person into the USA you can expect a big hassle on your way back into Canada....

You around Halifax? I'm just across the bay.

czarkazm 01-03-2003 07:46 PM

I'm mistaken for a terrorist everytime I fly down south. :(

yys 01-03-2003 07:53 PM

I Remember the good ole days when you could show up at the crossing in Niagra at 3:00am with a car load of peeps and just by stating your citizenship they'd wave you through.

Does anyone in the Vancouver area ever go down to Point Roberts? They used to just wave me through without even opening the window when I'd pull up. That place is great for cheap beer, smokes and gas. I had a friend who's house backed onto the border and we'd go over and buy cartons of smokes and cases of beer and just drive up to their backyard and toss the shit over the fence. Somedays I wish I still lived out there.
