Which is better for living Hong Kong or Singapore?

The laws dont trouble me as im not in porn and the taxes are about as low in either place, so whats it like comparing property prices, living standards, sexy girls on both places? Which would you choose to live in?

Hong Kong is practically your doorway to the East. But it is quite expensive there than Singapore. Singapore has a lot of annoying laws. You can't chew gum. No public smoking. However, I personally think that the food scene in Singapore is much vibrant than in Hong Kong. Kuala Lumpur seems more inviting. But Bangkok is the best.

You have to choose only between these two?

I have been to both and I can honestly say if you want to be safer with less gangstas running around, then choose Singapore.

Besides, Hong Kong is a magnet for criminal activity and the city is rat hole :)

Theyre both pretty advance, low tax economies which are mandarin speaking to some extent (I can speak some mandarin) so I think it has to be between these two.

Hong Kong has shitty property laws. Everything is lease from the government so it's like an indirect tax.

You can freehold as a foreigner in Singapore but it isn't easy and you're limited to certain places.

There's no taxes on dividends or outside income in Hong Kong, no sales taxes either. Exports are also untaxed.

For girls both places are not bad, depends on the type of girl you're looking for; wife material or P4P.

Definitely Singapore. Hong Kong is just another typical, large, dirty, populated city. Whereas Singapore is alot cleaner and more open.

Maybe but its hotter in Singapore than in Hong Kong which has cooler periods throughout the year....

Singapore is pretty close to Malaysia & Indonesia & not very far from Thailand which is good I think :)

I have stayed in both cities, Hong Kong is definitely a rat hole filled with criminals. You would be surprised how many people are killed at clubs down there by the gangstas and the police sweep it under the rug and it never makes the news or papers. My good friend who is is in the law enforcement down there makes 300K extra a year from being paid off by the local gangstas. Trust me, under the facade of bright lights, it's a rat hole of criminal activity :winkwink:

Singapore is just too frigging hot and humid. If that doesn't bother you, it's a great place.

If you have the money, I'd try Hong Kong. As far as trouble there, don't go looking for it. I know a few people who live normal lives there, never have any problems.

Singapore hands down. Not as overcrowded, better behaved drivers, nobody blows smoke in your face when you go to eat in a restaurant and it's just plain and simple a beautiful and safe place. Bangkok, on the other hand as mentioned here is the biggest shithole in the world. Thais are the most inherently xenophobic people in the world. Anyone willingly exposing themselves to that bullshit is shady him/herself and has no idea what they’re talking about, which in turn means that they cannot be trusted. More foreigners get killed in Thailand than in much of the rest of the world combined.

Lived in Singapore for some time and its the most organized, safe, convenient city I've ever lived in. Having said that after some time (~3 to 6 months) it started feel a bit small and artificial... Luckly you have very cheap and frequent flights from singapore to anywhere in southeast asia, so it's very easy to go to Thailand or something similar for the weekend if you bored.

Honk Kong has a great party scene, used to love the bars/clubs there nad aking the boat to Macau for some gambling. A great place do to business (or work as an expat for a multinational) but a lot of more polution, confusion, etc. than Singapore.

Interesting thread. I am thinking about Singapore too. I was in Hong Kong for a few weeks and loved it but living there I am not so sure about. I did see a couple people get killed in front of me and some others seriously injured. HK was def a shady place. I was there with the Triads so I was protected but saw some child slavery etc. This was about 6 years ago but I am sure it has not changed much.

I think it would be better to go across the border from HongKong and live in Shenzhen or even better Chang Ping.

Shenzhen has a crime problem and you're significantly wealthier (from a tax point of view) if you live in Hong Kong.

You're fine in Hong Kong if you keep your wits about you and don't go looking for trouble. If you do see trouble, ignore it and keep walking, people often get killed intervening in other peoples disputes.

Singapore is a great place to live as long as you keep aware of the various civic laws which are relatively harshly enforced.

It's cheaper to fly out of Singapore to Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, etc than it is in Hong Kong. A hop skimp and jump will see you in Malaysia, which offers the cheapest flights to Europe and Asia.

Well Singapore is just too hot. Hong Kong kinda grimey and crimey.

So what else is there? There must be some other low tax jurisdictions in asia right?
