Find a decent dentist that doesn't over or under do is a pain..

Went to a great one years ago.. he sold his practice to a husband and wife team.. Used them for several years until one day she tells me I need to have my wisdom teeth pulled. I'm 49 and I still have them. They are find.. one small filling on the back of one of them, no other issues. I'm like "Why?" she says cause they'll have to come out eventually.. She was trying to show me these white spots on them with a camera that were the startings of cavaties, etc. I wasn't impressed. At the same time there were upcoming issues with my daughter-in-laws teeth (she call the dentist 'Satan').

Just so happened that the next weekend the guy that sat next to me at the Mariners game was a dentist. We got to talking and my entire family now goes to him. In the last 4 years.. of 4 people.. 3 of us have had to have root canals from the old dentist retreated by an endodontist because she either didn't get all the roots or didn't go deep enough. With mine.. I had a crown over it and the endodontist was able to save the crown.

Oh and.. four years later, I still have my wisdom teeth... no problems at all.

Good luck man... it's an ordeal for sure. I spent about $20k to have mine done. Took about a year to finish.

Amputate Your Head 06-28-2010 05:45 PM

Oh, I don't know if your dentist has told you or not, but you can count on future root canals too. When you grind down your teeth that much (enough to crown them), there isn't much left between tooth and nerve. I've had three of my crowns nerves go nuclear and had to have emergency root canals. It sucks as much as any normal one, but with the added risk. They go right through the crown, but if it cracks or anything during the process, you gotta get a whole new piece.

I just had a bit of laser stuff done.. really quick healing. It was called WaterLase and they had one of the creators do mine as a training for my dentist office. Got it for done for free. The crowns in the office is kewl for one here and there. My dentist is doing that now, but for larger jobs they still send them to a lab. Root canals suck.. I've only had 2 in my life. The one that had to be redone and one when I was a kid on a tooth I damaged that eventually had to be pulled and an implant placed.

Amputate Your Head 06-28-2010 05:54 PM

Oh, here's another tip I just thought of.... get yourself some dental glue from CVS or something and just keep it with your bathroom shit. If a crown falls off, you can temporarily glue it in until you get an appt. to see your dentist. (do not use superglue). I had one canine crown that just would not stick... went in 3 times to have her fix it, on the fourth visit we just had a new one remolded. But when you have dinner plans and a crown falls off... you will be glad for dental glue. :winkwink:

First thing you should know is that Dentists are crooked, next to politicians, mechanics, real estate agents, and lawyers.

Chosen 06-29-2010 01:23 AM

Haven't been at dentist for many months...

Sarah_Jayne 06-29-2010 04:06 AM

Dentists are like mechanics in that they go in and have a look but could tell you just about anything is wrong and most people wouldn't know enough to argue. Also, they both rely on the fact that when you finally come to them you are in an emergency situation and will pay whatever needed to fix things.

VHNet 06-29-2010 04:20 AM

I totally misunderstood what the hell this thread was going to be about based on the title.....

And plumbers too.

You're right about only going in an emergency - last two times i've been to the dentist was for breaking a tooth rather than a random checkup.

Years ago my mum had a load of stuff done that the next dentist after we moved house then said were you going to xyz before because they have a reputation for unnecessary work :disgust

pornguy 06-29-2010 05:45 AM

I had one do just over half of a root canal and fucked up the tooth. Had to have it fixed. Man that shit pissed me off.

xmas13 06-29-2010 08:48 AM

Lol :p idd the dentist isn't always as fun as in the porn movies;...

DamnGoodRatio 06-29-2010 09:08 AM

I ahte Most Dentist, they are all looking for the up sell. Everytime I go in the first thing they say is "do you still have your wisdom teeth" without even looking to see if they are bad, they say "they need to come out". Now you know this without even looking in my mouth.
WHAT IN THE HELL do you need x-rays for then if you are so good at diagnosing without looking?

Use to go to my friend "He was the best" but he retired. My new dentist said I needed a crown, I said NO! Called my friend he looked at the tooth and called the dentist, told him to do an inlay, was the dentist MAD; been in for 8 years now with no problems and a LOT LOT cheaper. Found a new dentist after that quack . . .

Tom_PM 06-29-2010 09:20 AM

Good luck on your crowns and roots and such.

damn, that's crazy. I don't think I've ever heard of that. Good think I switch dentists from time to time. I guess one of them would have mentioned something like this :)

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised at the stories of "upselling".... none of my dentists have done that to me. I had to go in and specifically request all new teeth.
