Not that I know the best place to check for backlinks, but was surprised that SiteExplorer on Yahoo had it at less than 400. I assume you're correct in that he has some good ones to get a ranking like that on such few links. Plus SiteExplorer had it as having over 20,000 pages.

Having said that, a number of the other sites I'm seeking on page 1 for both terms are sites I've never heard of.

Coming in at #8 for me.

Well, i checked out the posts that where made just quickly. And most where made when he was on holiday and/or in hospital. I'm sure there has been a company involved in what was done and money involved to spam that much in such little time.
Spamming savagely like that will get you ranked for 2 weeks max before they set a manual ban on you and from there you wont ever get out.
If you think that they ban you now for having too many back links with the same anchor.
So at the end of the day it really isn't worth it.
