Working around gasoline: Hurrrrrrrrrr

So an old fuel line finally kicked the bucket on my car, and I just finished fixing it. At first, the smell of sweet, sweet 94 octane is seductive and makes me want to drive it like I stole it. Then, about 20 minutes and a new fuel line + clamps later, I think I'm going to pass out :1orglaugh

Anyone else work on their own car? What antics have you found yourself getting into? How many battle scars or missing knuckles do you have? Have you lost at least 600 million brain cells in the last week? If you answer no to that question, you aren't a car guy. :1orglaugh

PS: Bonus points if you have cried from frusteration while attempting to get a rusted bolt out. :(

I drank a little power steeling fluid the last time I replaced the pump.... tasty.

My mechanic-ing days are long behind me thankfully. I once dropped the starter from a 2 1/2 ton Army truck right on my forehead. Was unconscious down in the pit for at least a half hour I think... :1orglaugh

lol, holy shit. At least you got a nap out of it, I guess? I got oil in my eye once. Fuck, that was unpleasant. Eye washing stations make me cringe, now.

was it delicious like coolant, or nasty? I got a drip of coolant in my mouth once while draining a friends cooling system to flush it out. Part of me was like "YEAH I GOTTA SWALLOW THIS IT TASTES GREAT". The other part of me was like "urrr, you should probably spit that out and rinse really well if you don't want to DIE".

Oil in the eye was still the worst, however. Fuck minivans. Especially V6 minivans that are FWD. Jesus christ on a candy cane cross, "how do you get the spark plug out? It's completely inaccesible", "oh well, you see, you lift the engine with an engine hoist!", "... what?".

Don't even get me started on FWD V8's.

I dropped a front rotor from an F-350 on the tip of my finger. That was pretty much when I decided that 8 bucks an hour wrenching on cars wasn't worth it.

What in the hell? You were getting 8 bucks an hour as a mechanic? That'd be like a brain surgeon working for 13 bucks an hour.

Mechanics here make upwards of $30.00 if they are good at what they do. Even more of they have insanely good diagnostic and electrical skills.

I got carb cleaner in the eye once when I was young. Ran into the house to flush my eyes, everything turned out ok. I wear eye protection for routine stuff now :1orglaugh

I also have a nice half inch scar on my middle finger from a brake line replacement. Wasn't even from the repair job, it was from cleaning up and putting tools away into a buddy's toolbox. Hacksaw blade bit me. Didn't bother going to get stitches, we just butterflied it shut.
