Crystal Cave is right by where I went to school in Kutztown. Its ok, but Indian Echo Caverns is right beside where I live now and that place is pretty cool

You want to go Crystal Cave when there is NO ONE else around. Ive found the times I wanted to go there was always a field trip or a large group. Everyone talks and moves around to much for you to stop and stare at the caves itself. They used to only have guided tours and they go through pretty quickly, but I'm sure you can explore on your own, just sucks having to take pictures over someones head all day long

Yeah, I hate crowds. Ideally I would like to find a place way off the radar.

Howe Caverns is pretty cool. You get to go down and ride through the caves in a boat through the underground river. If I remember correctly, I think they refer to it as the River Styx.

Based on the websites, that one looks like the best one, but what about crowds?

I would imagine most of these kind of places are best in the non-summer off-season...

I went to Howe caverns when i was going to SUNY Albany. Howe caverns is fascinating if your into nature. But its in the middle of nowhere so you should find other things to do(cooperstown, turning stone, oneonta bars) if you go.

i can point to some serious DL caves that nobody know of near albany..in fact you would be suprised at how many miles of caves there are in the capital district that noone has a clue about
hit me up on skype if you want some directions....these are some serious caves tooo with underwater lakes and rivers -

they were my stomping grounds at 3am after the bars in albany throughout college

Thanks for all of the feedback so far.

Here's a bump for the weekend crew.

Are you seeking a touristy walk through cave tour?

Or a down and dirty caving (spelunking) experience?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caving

Big difference between the two.

From an ecological aspect, tourist caves (ie. Crystal Cave) are far better than having all those visitors exploring less known caves. While caving can be rewarding, the more people going through, often the more damage inflicted on the cave.

Small world, I went to Siena (1st degree) now I go somewhere else far away.

Howe Caverns is a touristy cave, its pretty good though. There are quite a few unknown caves that you will get fucking muddy and need climbing equipment and shit to make it all the way through, fucking love those!
