US footy is more similar to British rugby, but we do not wear protective gear, we just play the game.

Its similar to martial arts these days. Go to a Thai boxing comp, no head gear & leg pads, just enjoy either slapping someone or someone slapping you. Its not like Tai Kwon Do.

Of course it's not as manly as NFL football, let's be honest, when a soccer player falls to the ground because he is taken down, he squirms and cries like a baby. I don't see that in the NFL :)
