I Want To Rent Some Server Time

To run this and test out what I can do.

    http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/te...mId=2H274R71S1

Since I don't need much harddrive space to run it I'm looking for a good deal.

I will spend no more than $100 for 1 month.

Whoever can crunch the most data for this price will get my business.

I already donated thousands. I need to use a server to see what results I get.

I need to rent a server.

Who has the best deal for what I need.

I'm not asking for advice on how to spend my money.

I want to rent a $100 quad-core server for that price or less. That's the going rate.

I already know what I want to do.

Give me a quote. Can you do it for less or can you give me the best bang for my $$.

What do you want to run on the server? I don't quite get it from that link.

They usually have you stick a small program on your computer that uses its brains while it is idle to do number-crunching for research projects.

I would doubt someone is going to let you have a server to hook up to one of these data crunchers. You could run up a bandwidth bill you'd never be able to pay off. This stuff is for home grids so your computer can crunch data when you are not using it. You'll never top out the university geeks that have access to the good computers.

I've run this, it's mostly CPU and RAM ... not really much bandwidth so no real need to be hooked up to a high speed pipe in a data center.

You could pickup a cheap white box or something, plug it in at home and run it there. Initial cost is all you're out, which drops your overall cost dramatically as each month passes.

OTOH his electric bill would go up from running the box at full load 24/7

How much higher do you think 1 desktop adds to a monthly electric bill? I don't really know, but now I'm curious.

1 desktop with normal usage, not much. But one with the CPU at 100% day and night must make a difference. How much, I don't know. I never tried doing that.

A computer whose label or power supply says 300 watts might only use about 70 watts when it's actually running, and only 100 even in peak times with serious number-crunching and all the drives spinning.
                                                For example, let's say you have a big high-end computer with a gaming-level graphics card and an old CRT monitor, and you leave them on 24/7. That's about 330 watts x 24 hours x 365 days/yr = 2,890,800 watt-hours, or 2891 kilowatt-hours. If you're paying $0.14 per kWh, you're paying $405 a year to run your computer.

Let's try a different example: You have a computer that's less of an energy hog, like in iMac G5 20", which uses about 105 watts, and you're smart enough to turn it off when you're not using it. You use it for two hours a day, five days a week. That's ten hours a week, or 520 hours a year. So your 105 watts times 520 hours = 54,600 watt-hours. Divide by 1000 and you have 55 kilowatt-hours (kWh). If you're paying 10¢ per kilowatt-hour, then you're paying $5.50 a year to run your computer.
Eh, not so much. He doesn't need a monitor or high level graphics card.

Yeah, I forgot how it works. Years ago I was hooked up to the SETI program. I think that one was the one that started it all.

Sounds expensive - renting a server for $100/month.

I think you can test out things for a lot cheaper.

                                                    Good luck.

I'm beginning to think that would be the best route.

I'm also thinking it my be best to run my contest here and on other boards to insure that I'm getting more participation.

I'm worried that I might not even get the same amount of data crunched that I would by buying the server time if I don't.

The reason I wanted to rent some server time was to check and see how much data could be crunched for $100 at a normal profit margin.

Since I have raised $2,300 for my next contest I want to make sure as much data gets crunched as possible.

I have an unused, dedicated server that ends billing in 4 weeks. This means I have paid for it and it goes unused. I pulled all my sites off it and went to another host and this is still hanging around until the billing period ends.

I can give you root access and ip and it's all yours until the billing period ends...which will be in 4 about weeks...minus the time it takes for you to respond.

I have a Q6600 server which runs at 100% CPU load most of the time. I measured its consumption at 150W under full load, or about 1314kWh per year, which in my area ends up being about $USD225.

Undervolting the CPU reduced the consumption by 75W, which halves running the cost. The beauty of undervolting is that it doesn't affect performance one bit since the CPU is still running at exactly the same frequency... just a bit cooler.
