Philadelphia cop intentionally shot himself - May 2010

(CNN) -- A Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, police officer who told authorities he was shot while on patrol last month has admitted he shot himself intentionally, the city's police commissioner said Tuesday. Ralston reported that on April 5 he saw two African-American males arguing on a train track in West Philadelphia. He told investigators that when he stopped the two men for questioning one of them pulled out a gun and shot him in the left shoulder. LINK

Michigan attorney refutes police claims in girl's shooting - Jun 2010

(CNN) -- A Michigan attorney on Tuesday refuted a medical examiner's findings about a 7-year-old girl's shooting death, charging a police cover-up in the incident. He said the report disproves a claim by police that there had been a tussle between officers and the girl's grandmother, Mertilla Jones, inside their house. The grandmother and granddaughter were sleeping on a couch in the front room when the raid occurred. "Certainly there was no time for a struggle," Fieger said. LINK

New Orleans cops shot man in back as he ran away - Feb 2010

New Orleans, Louisiana (CNN) -- New Orleans police lined up "like at a firing range" and fatally shot an unarmed man in the back as he fled from them in the days after Hurricane Katrina swept ashore, a witness to the shooting told CNN. LINK

Officer goes on trial for fatal shooting of unarmed man - Jun 2010

The shooting was captured on a bystander's cell-phone video camera, widely circulated on the Internet and on news shows, and spurred several protests and riots in and around Oakland. The video showed Mehserle pulling his gun and fatally shooting Grant in the back as another officer kneeled on the unarmed Grant. Mehserle may have intended to draw and fire his Taser rather than his gun, according to a court filing by his lawyer.

Mehserle resigned his position a few days after the incident and was later arrested in Nevada. Mehserle was released on a $3 million bond. LINK

Ex-NY police commissioner arrives at prison to begin sentence - May 2010

New York (CNN) -- Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik arrived at the federal prison in Cumberland, Maryland, Monday to begin a 48-month prison sentence, prison authorities said. Kerik had been scheduled to go to trial on various corruption charges, including allegations that he received and concealed benefits of about $255,000 in renovations to his Riverdale, New York, apartment from a company seeking to do business with the city of New York. He pleaded guilty to that charge and several tax-related counts in November. LINK

Evidence investigation puts New York cases into question - May 2010

Irregularities in drug evidence processed by a New York Police Department forensics technician are being investigated, putting into question all cases the technician has worked on in her 24 years on the job, police say.

On April 30, Mariem Megalla was working on a case with a large sample of drugs: 84 pouches of cocaine, said her lawyer, Benjamin Lieberman. She was later told to stop what she was working on and to take the samples back to Evidence Control.

On Friday morning, Internal Affairs arrived at her home to tell her that she was suspended without pay. LINK

Harris Calls SF Drug Lab Scandal A 'Fiasco' - Apr 2010

San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris called the police crime lab scandal a "fiasco" during a Friday afternoon press conference as she handed potential prosecution in that case over to the state. "There has been a failure in the crime lab that has resulted in essentially a devastating violation of the public trust," Harris said at an afternoon news conference in her office. LINK

Suspensions ordered for MPD officers in probes - May 2010

WAILUKU - Suspensions ranging from one to 30 days were ordered for Maui Police Department officers as part of internal investigations concluded during the first four months of this year, police reported. The 30-day suspension was for committing a criminal act while off duty in November.

In another case, an officer was suspended for three days for using police identity improperly and for unacceptable behavior while off duty in February 2009.

One-day suspensions were ordered for an officer who failed to properly supervise and ensure proper notification for prisoner escape and for an officer who failed to perform duties as watch commander, both in January 2009. Other one-day suspensions were for failing to submit evidence recovered from a prisoner last June, for colliding with another vehicle while changing lanes in December and for losing control and hitting a fence in a motor vehicle crash in December.

A written reprimand and driver training were ordered for an officer who failed to properly negotiate a U-turn and collided with another vehicle in July.

Two other vehicle collisions resulted in written reprimands - one to an officer who misjudged distance and hit a parked vehicle in August and another who lost control and hit a guardrail last October.

Written reprimands also were given to an officer who made inappropriate comments, embarrassing the department while on duty in August; an officer who failed to follow proper procedures in securing a prisoner in January 2009; an officer who failed to submit an accurate report in May 2009; an officer who failed to submit a timely report in May 2009; and an officer who discussed confidential subject matter in a public setting last September.

An officer received an oral reprimand for failing to secure an unattended vehicle in October. In all, 31 MPD employees were investigated for 23 incidents. LINK
