What would the world be like if there were open borders everywhere?

if there were no borders and everyone could go and live anywhere they wanted to, what would the world be like?

I had a republican friend tell me he believes in open borders which surprised me.

Most of europe have open borders ? and although I havent given it any thought maybe more open borders wouldnt have such a negative impact as some might think....you could also exclude 3rd world countries for instance if needed from migrating...but for the USA /Canada /UK etc l wouldnt expect a massive exodus from one country to another.

CunningStunt 06-06-2010 01:33 AM

England has become a total mess the last 5 years mainly because of this.

But are they arriving from USA,Canada,Austraila etc ..I think not ? hence I would limit it based on different factors to avoid the poor etc migrating to take advantage..or else you would get swamped with arrivals....maybe thats not politically correct but you would have to have some rules/exemptions.

You can't really have true "open borders" if you are going to limit who can go where. We basically already have that. If you live in England or France or Canada or any other developed nation and you want to move to another developed nation you already have a clear path to doing so. Some countries may be harder to move to than others, but you can do it. The people that have difficulty moving to industrialized nations are those who live in underdeveloped/3rd world countries and have very limited resources.

From what I understand a true open border policy allows anyone from anywhere to go anywhere they please. The idea is that those underdeveloped countries would then become developed because it would encourage countries to pool resources and help each other out. In reality, at least at first, it would mean that many poor people would floor to the more developed nations in search of a better life. The hope is that they would then get jobs, work, pay taxes and become good citizens and that country could continue to prosper and maybe even help to develop some of the underdeveloped places so that people would have a desire to stay there.

I think it is an interesting idea, but in the end I don't think it could ever work. People are just too divided by culture, morals, religion and lifestyle have something like this occur on a grand scale.

A lot of republicans that lean libertarian believe in open borders. But usually the belief comes with stipulations like no minimum wage, no welfare, no free health care ect.

Open borders without open markets and equal protection under the law would result in headaches for host nations. However, if two countries had open borders and open markets/legal parity, an argument could be made for a WIN WIN situation.

I think that sounds fair enough if it could be done.......everyone deserves a chance in life and I think its a little unfair that someone who wants to be a good honest working citizen is held back at times due to the country they live in and cant do anything about it.

Exactly. I live in a developing country and I can tell you for a fact that the main reasons many developing countries are poor are because of partly/completely closed economies and legal systems that are distorted to protect and preserve such oligarchic arrangements. The idea of an "open border" and union with developing countries might be the fire lit in the ass of developing countries' political elite to get their shit together so they can take a bite out of a larger economic pie. Viewed from this lens, what happened to Greece and its forced compliance with IMF guidelines to open up its economy, while painful in the short term, might be one hell of an opportunity to improve its economy.

Black Ops 06-06-2010 04:40 AM

You mean have true freedom?

Never happen. The elite would never allow it, the poor would not know what to do with it.

Wilsy 06-06-2010 04:46 AM

This is one of the main reasons that UK is in financial trouble because we allowed so many people in the country and let them take the jobs once they got paid from said jobs they sent all the money out of the country to support their families still living in their home country.

So to answer your question i think it would be a terrible idea

:1orglaugh spot on!

If the entire world was open border it would probably mean that humans had taken the next evolutionary step i.e. no nationalism, no warfare and as mentioned probably no general welfare system. You simply went where you could succeed and there would only be a safety net for those who couldnt succeed on there own be it from injury or handicap etc.

In other words maybe several hundred years if humans survive that long.

By now I say the best part would be totally destroyed by Islamic terrorists. Local wars popping up by the minute and the worst parts of the Bible.

You are forgetting one key element...

LIFE IS NOT FAIR!

nakeddutch 06-06-2010 10:04 AM

I think for the first couple of years
people would rush to places they have dreamt of...
then 'peolpe just won't care' that is, we need
about a generation and it won't be an issue
anymore

Sly 06-06-2010 10:10 AM

I believe in open supermarkets so I can get my donut and juice on the weekends.

Otherwise you are talking about a utopia that does not and cannot exist. Human instincts kill any possibility of a utopia. You can talk about love and happiness and blah blah blah... but in the end, when there is no food left, no money left, no shelter left... we care about one core person, and that is ourselves.

True open borders are unrealistic and dangerous. All it takes is one person that does not believe in that harmony and chaos will ensue.

DaddyHalbucks 06-06-2010 10:16 AM

The concept of "country" would be antiquated.

rogueteens 06-06-2010 10:21 AM

Everybody would be piss poor and working for miniscule wages as immigrants would undercut local wages, living standards would reduce in the developed countries to meet the lower standards of third world countries. multinational corporations would be megapowerful (more so than now) and be the new "countries"

Agreed. Life may not be fair but it does follow certain patterns. Like the law of return, the law of the seed, karma to some degree, etc.
