What is the protocol for old toner cartridges?

I have a box of big ass empty toner cartridges from my laserjet... are we supposed to recycle these things or turn them in somewhere? I wanna get rid of this box, but I have this nagging feeling I'm supposed to do something other than throw them in the trash. :helpme

Each city has it's own policies, you need to check with those who pick up the materials.

You can get them refilled.

Really? It's broken down by municipality like that? Could I just take them to staples or Office Max or something and drop them off there? Don't they refill and reuse them or something?

These things are like, $100 each, and I have 14 toner bays. (10 bays in the professional large format roll printer, 4 in the office laserjet). Staples only pays $3 bucks each for empties.

shit.... wonder how much it would cost to refill them for myself.

Wizzo 06-01-2010 11:01 AM

Office Depot will give you $3 a piece for them. :pimp

Yes, most cities have different rules and conditions. I have no idea about staples, k-mart, or dominos pizza.

getting $3 beats getting nothing at all :2 cents:

Walking them there would save gas and the environment ;-)

yeah, that's why I've hung on to them for so long. Didn't think the landfill was quite the right place for them.

Check a local classifieds. Some people buy them at pretty decent rates.

mozadek 06-01-2010 10:46 PM

Fuck it, throw the cartridges in a dumpster.

TrainWreckContent 06-01-2010 11:08 PM

check with your local schools lots of times they will take them off your hands because they get them refilled instead of buying new ones for the class rooms....

Bird 06-01-2010 11:12 PM

Not like they are cans, just trash them and quit being a pack rat..or if your die hard drop em off at office max

Bird 06-01-2010 11:14 PM

Oh wait I hear they can print and grow skin cells by refilling empty cartridges with cells
