was playing around with it last night on my dev server, some very handy new features but not all of them are accessible from the admin section..you will still need to mod your functions.php file to open up all the features now available to you.
also note a cpl lines of code need to be added to your theme if they are not yet updated for 3.0 for some of the features to show up in your themes front end.

to address the OP's need to prepare for upgrades to 3.0 to avoid security issues, WP has said they will support 2.9 with security releases if needed in the future, so you do not have to rush to upgrade everything to 3.0
