Captain of the Sea Shepard about to do 15 years in a Japanese prison
Anti-whaling activist goes on trial in Japan
Peter Bethune was captain of Sea Shepherd's futuristic boat, the Ady Gil. The batmobile-esque, $3 million boat collided with a Japanese whaling ship, the Shonan Maru 2, and sank in January. Weeks later, Bethune jumped aboard the Shonan Maru 2 and attempted to make a citizen's arrest of the captain. He was arrested and brought back to Japan to face criminal charges. Bethune's case is the first time a Sea Shepherd activist has been tried in a Japanese criminal court in the group's long-running battle with Japan's whalers in the icy waters of the Antarctic. Japan annually hunts whales in the Antarctic, despite a worldwide moratorium on whaling, under the loophole that a country may legally do so if its purpose is scientific research. Sea Shepherd, who notes the whale meat then gets sold in Japanese markets and served in restaurants, calls the science argument a sham. LINK What's interesting to me is that we just turn a blind eye to Japan's whaling. (and that the Japanese see no problem with it). But then, there are the shark-finners and plenty of other environmental rapists out there as well. Seems like the Japanese are the worst offenders though. |
Thanks for this info. I've enjoyed watching the two TV series featuring the Sea Sheperd society (even if some of it seemed scripted).
The Ady Gil was a nice ship. I did not know that it sank. Bethane is the original owner of the ship and donated it to the sea sheperd society. He's a multi-millionaire, so you can expect him to have a good defense in court. |

I remember the episode where they tried to kill Paul Watson

I don't have a problem with the whale hunting that's going on now.

I'm kind of curious... if anyone knows...
does Japan have thugs in their prison system like "Bubba The Asspounder"? I'm having a hard time picturing some small Japanese dude trying to fuck a white guy in the ass in prison. "You going to sucka my cock and you going to rike it!" |
Don't they have a bail-out system in Japan? It should be no problem for this guy to get bailed out.
But of course, staying in jail is actually what he wants (at least until he gets his trial). |

About fucking time. Eco-terrorists should be treated no different than any other kinds of terrorists.

Who are the real eco-terrorists here? The ones poaching whales illegally or the ones trying to stop them? There is a worldwide ban on whaling that Japan is thumbing it's collective nose at. |

Clubbing seals in Canada isn't cool either , but they still do it. BTW, Japan isn't the only one doing it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whaling |

The Danish had some rules they had to follow in order to fly their flag, but I don't think any of them prevented SS from doing as it pleases in open water. (I'm less than 100% sure of the actual Danish restrictions or if they are even still flying their flag). |

What I have never understood is why so many Governments *LET* the Japanese continue to whale in their water

Have you seen "Sharkwater"? It will make you sick. |

The issue seems to be that the same body that established the treaty, has no means to enforce it. Having said that though, can't really say I agree with the methods that Paul Watson has used to try and stop it. |
Greenpeace just tagged up a ship down here with some oil from the spill, on the topic of ecoterrorists. link to pics
poor whales. |

the whole "culture" thing doesnt cut it anymore. 100 years ago even scientists thought whales and dolphins were just big fish. We know now they are highly developed see mammals with forebrains equal or larger to our own. there's been a ton of research which is why, during the nixon administration they finally enacted the marine mammals protection act, but of course twats like the japanese whaling comission always find ways of getting around it so they call the hunts "scientific research." complete bullshit! |
Thanks for this info :)

I think a good solution would be to employ some of those out-of-work Somalian pirates. Load them up on one of Sea Shepard ships, sail them out to one of the whalers and let them do their thing.

the problem is the control of words and their meanings. people are lead to believe that organizations like greenpeace, sea shepherd etc are "eco-terrorists" which is funny considering that the groups actually destroying the oceans are the multi-nationals. |

There aren't many things in this world I would ever say this about, but I decided a few years ago that if there were any skills I could bring to the crew, I would volunteer at least 1-2 years of my time to serve with Sea Shepard. (no compensation required).
Some people ask why, and I say why not? It's something I actually care about. I went to war on the other side of the Earth for the Bush Family Oil, (that I don't give a shit about). I could easily do a few years taking down whalers. But alas, not much need for a graphics guy on those ships, and my soldiering days are long behind me. |

Your title had me worried for a minute. I thought Paul Watson was in trouble.
New season starts in just a few days! :) |
Man, that boat is awesome. I've never seen it on the show before. I really hope there is at least some footage of the crash.
