Wordpress as a site tour?

Anyone pay sites using WP as a base for a tour?

Why the fuck would you do something like that? An innate need to overload your servers or make your admins homicidal?

The questions is who is using - not why.

Someone here has a full paysite script with tour/psd. It's free to use too.

I'm working on one right now. Another solo girl, chicasplace.com, just came out with a wordpress site tour. (I'm assuming it is wordpress, could be another blog script)

So now since Grouchy brought it up - what are the downsides of using WP as a tour?

I use wp as cms on one of my sites that gets 20k uniques per day. No problems, just use wp cache. I love wordpress, I make all my sites on it

Did you know Wordpress has plenty of top of the line caching plugins?

I've completely replaced most of our members' areas with Wordpress, and it looks, and works, just great.

I'm now converting our tours to Wordpress.

Everyone needs to stop thinking of WP as just a blogging site. It can be converted to any type of site imaginable.

I love wordpress, currently working on a free site and members area running off wordpress. Its code just like anything else, once you learn in you can turn a blog into a paysite with everything you can imagine.

WP is not only easy, but it has 1000 times more features than ANY CMS out there. As for terribly coded, I don't know, I'm pretty sure those guys at NASA, Yahoo or CNN (just to name a few WP users) have 1 or 2 coders that know their stuff.

And as for insecure... well, all scripts are insecure, WP is attacked more because there are millions of users, but I dare you to find an "un-hackable" script. Microsoft gets his programs hacked within hours of being launched, same for Adobe and same for any program that worth a dime. Of course hackers won't worry about scripts used but 20 or 30 people in the world.

A final thought: how can you compare 1, 2 or 10 programmers working in a script to many thousands making a script better working in it every day? Seriously, mere logic tells you you're way off base

We've made many WP tours, and as a matter of fact we're working on a super-tour based on WP right now, with features I've never seen in any paysite tour. We've built regular tours, communities, tube sites, libraries, shops, whatever you could imagine... and then more. And frankly, although all CMS have its advantages and disadvantages, when you compare everything you'll realize there's no script that can get closer to WP in terms of features, manageability, ease of use and flexibility, that's why we decided to specialize in it.

It's amazing.

I remember the same subject discussed here about a year ago and there was a majority of pessimistic slugs. Very glad to see that much more peoples became less ignorant. Of course there are always group of critics and it is really good as it makes the world go round.

Regarding the pitfalls listed in this thread, Harvey touched them with a really professional replies. I have nothing to add.

Here's just one of the pitfalls of wordpress: /wp-includes/media.php (the file responsible for showing attachments) contains css code. This css code is entered in the page's body. This is bad form, invalid html and will break your site when you update later-on.

Wordpress is a steaming mess of functions with unpredictable returns. Just because it's shiny on the outside does not make code code on the inside. And the "codex" has become unmanageable for them as well. Often you have to find out with pure trial and error what a function does.

If you can't understand the code doesn't mean it is messy.

It's pretty obvious that you have a grudge against WP. Sure, it's not coded by a guy in Europe who coded it for an adult company. It's not aimed specifically for adult, that's why so many adult industry guys distrust it. They either see "free" or they see it's not aimed specifically for their industry and they automatically poopoo it.

I can throw notable sites at you all day that run WP, but it simply seems I'd be wasting my breath. You don't trust it and are pretty negative towards it (and apparently to anyone who supports it), so there's no point.

1) I do understand it, because I've taken my time to read through its' extensive documentation. It's not like many other CMS's out there that have all documentation inside the source code in a few lines of comments. Anything that's not covered too clearly in the documentation, and I can ask the extensive community and will usually get a pretty good answer.

2) For an everyday user, it IS easy to use. That's a fairly big bonus. I don't see why a CMS should be complicated. For a power user, it has very useful tools right below the surface.

3) When you say "hack" together, what are you referring to? I've played around with many CMSs in my time, and none give you a clear cut way to manually do everything that it usually does automatically. If you want to add a post to WP, you don't have to mess around with SQL code. It's a simple, single function. Add users to the DB is the same. Do you consider hacking the script, using its' own built-in functions? I mean, hell, if WP doesn't do anything natively, and if a plugin does not exist to do what I want, then yes I would "hack" in the functionality. Like "hacking" in a gallery ripper to my own WP site, www.cutiesr.us. Should I have gone with a more popular gallery ripper? I mean, it may well have been less work, but I don't know if the gallery ripper I buy is being developed any longer. If a security issue is found, what's the turn around time on it?

Maybe the open source fanboy in me skews my view, but I trust hundreds of people submitting bugs and fixing them, to a handful of developers working on a script.

Now to your negatives:

1) I believe WP is very well coded. Sure, some things could be changed, but that's why it's in ACTIVE development.
2) There's plenty of cache plugins for WP, most notably WP-Super-Cache and W3-Cache, both of which are class-A plugins that turn a normal WP site into a monster. I really don't think you have any idea of what you're talking about.
3) Of course no script is perfect. But in my years of using WP, I've yet to be hacked (knock on wood). The great thing about WP is that security issues are fixed ASAP. I trust WP's security more than I do some script written by a solitary 18 year old.

tl;dr: I don't think you know what you're talking about.

Wordpress is awesome. No complaints here.
