some of the program that claim to copy a dvd on to a standard cd-r are not what they appear they show you how to recompress the dvd to a smaller format so it will fit on a cd but I dont think they would play in a dvd player

they'll play but some of the quality is lost

DVDs are double sided and they store far more data than any CD

they work....but commercial dvd's are almost always larger than the standard 4.7gb dvd's that you can buy for your burner.

DVDxCopy does let you just choose the main movie .vob file so you can sometimes fit a movie on one DVD but most movies are more than 4.7gb. Some are dual layered 9+ gb movies.

so it can be done...but it sux that you can't just toss in a movie and press copy. You have to give up the extras and put it on 2 dvd's most of the time.

someone correct me if i'm wrong, i tried to copy office space as a test and only the fbi warning played and then it quit.

I read in the times that a magic marker will cover their anti pirating code if written over the inside ring of the dvd.

Yes they work.
Yes there is a way to rip a DVD and burn it to a cd and it WILL play in your regular DVD player. (Even if it won't, who cares? Get a decent video card with video out and hook it to your tv.)
Thing is, a ripped DVD takes about 6 gigs of hard drive space and it takes forever.
Go to Google and do a search on "how to rip DVDs". There are a few very specific and detailed tutorials listed on the first page of returned search results.

if you're gonna spend all that time ripping dvd's I think the wasted time alone would cost more then the actual dvd.

Don't be so damn cheap drop 20 bucks for a dvd if you really like it or just spend 3 bucks at blockbuster.

i rip, encode, burn using smartripper, ifoedit, prassi. i have an ao3
