Lets brag: How fast have you gone in a car?

My car is stupidly powerful, but limited by gearing, since it was never intended to go any higher than 180km/h on the stock ecu (fuel cut speed limiters suck). I don't have a stock ecu anymore, but I do have about twice as much power compared to stock.

I'll start:

about 240kmh / 150mph (gearing limited). 8000rpm, 5th gear. This was done in a controlled racetrack enviornment. :winkwink:

Never again. With a stripped interior and ultra sticky tires (with no attempts made to reduce road noise), the roar of the exhaust (3" straight through turbo back), and straight cut 5th gear, i couldn't hear for a few days :P

Now you.

seeandsee 05-21-2010 04:24 PM

my bogus car was 160km max, but i was in car that was speeding 210km/h and i dont feel secure to repeat it any time soon, so better slow down

Amputate Your Head 05-21-2010 04:28 PM

I routinely did approx. 150mph twice a day, every day, to and from work on the Autobahn for 2 years while stationed in Germany in the 80s. (BMW)

epitome 05-21-2010 04:31 PM

Riding around with my friend Frankie is his BMW is terrifying.

He feels it necessary to pass on two lane roads at 150 MPH.

I'm always shocked because it never feels like we're going that fast but the speedometer says we are.

MaDalton 05-21-2010 04:31 PM

my car does officially 155 mp/h (250 km/h) and i do that quite regularly on the german autobahn

CyberHustler 05-21-2010 04:31 PM

I've never gone above about 85mph... I have this crazy phobia of crashing and dying and maybe killing others too.

See, now I bet a BMW at 150 is stable as a rock. And quiet too, I'd imagine. I miss having a quiet car :(

they're way better now than they were in the 80s... :1orglaugh
but even then they were great. You really have to pay attention though. I will easily drift up to 120mph, here in California... lol
feels like going 30. Smooth as glass.

That's why you do it at 3 am when you're the only car on the highway. Unless you're on the autobahn, where people anticipate cars hauling ass. In vancouver, you basically can't drive fast on the highway because everyone sits in the fast lane with their thumb in their ass.

and darting through traffic is silly :P

I've heard stories of I5 in LA where the flow of traffic is 90mph. I like teh sound of that :D

CaptainWolfy 05-21-2010 04:40 PM

i have gone 180 when me driving but was in car with 210km/h wasn't that fun.. :S

Nicky 05-21-2010 04:41 PM

220-230km/h don't remember exactley but somewhere around there. Not much to brag off though lol

That's during the daytime, lol :1orglaugh

If I'm coming up from LA after dark, I set the cruise at 120

140 mph in an Acura NSX on the wat to Vegas.

Bird 05-21-2010 04:49 PM

Got it up to 125 a few times from between Sac and LA on I-5 and on the same trip on I-10 between LA an PHX.

Sacramento - Phoenix in 8 and a half hours

sandman! 05-21-2010 04:49 PM

150mph give or take

Minte 05-21-2010 04:53 PM

I redlined my Lambo 2 weeks ago at a local air strip. If the speedo can be trusted it was well north of 190mph.

210 mph at miami homestead international.

jimmy-3-way 05-21-2010 05:25 PM

I've ridden shotgun in speeding Bugatti Veyron.

But you can't see the speedo from the passenger seat.

It felt like 85, which means it was probably 230.

L-Pink 05-21-2010 05:27 PM

Around 150 mph in a Formula Ford at Summit Point Raceway.

.

Meeper 05-21-2010 05:28 PM

I got up to 130 in my convertible and decided I didn't feel like dying so I throttled down. haha

Catalyst 05-21-2010 05:31 PM

About 250mph, but that was in Germany...

Brian Street Team 05-21-2010 05:36 PM

I'm about to go about 150+ in this...

Only picture proof I have - in my 89 Mustang LX when i was like 18 or 19.

I did 155+ in my current car when I first got it on the way down to mexico. Kept it pegged for about 5 miles then when I slowed back down to the speed limit I passed a cop LOL.

MrBottomTooth 05-21-2010 05:47 PM

Around 145 MPH in a Camaro SS, but usually either run out of road or come up on traffic, so I would slow down. The street racing fines around here are nasty.

It's a convertible though, so when you hit that speed it seems like the car is about to go airborne.

I've done about 130 MPH with the top down but I think that is part of the reason I am balding so bad.

2012 05-21-2010 05:48 PM

30 mph .

If you notice (and you're talking about the 98-02 version) the hood scoop/cowl looks like it's having a seizure over 130mph. Both of my SS's have done it.

I never actually noticed before, too busy watching the road ahead for farmers about to pull out in front of me driving tractors. LOL. I added the SSRA to mine, not sure if that would affect it at all. (it's a 2000)

Jon Oso 05-21-2010 06:04 PM

the air lid set-ups add a bit. I don't know much about the SSRA set ups but my SLP lid made a noticeable difference. muffler didn't really make any difference other than noise, then other than nitrous my next mod was an Ls2, cam, stall, trans, etc.

They LOVE nitrous though. won't add to the top speed at all but it will get you there a hell of a lot faster.

beerptrol 05-21-2010 06:10 PM

the fastest I've gone in a car was 3 minutes. Gf gave me a handjob at the drive in

MrBottomTooth 05-21-2010 06:12 PM

I bought the SLP lid too. Also bought a ported throttle body, a diablosport tuner, and SLP loudmouth exhaust.

Kinda wish I never went with the loudmouth because now it is too loud. Surprisingly the diablo tuner made the most difference in drivability just because of how it firmed the shifts up.

Once I get around to buying a ported fast 92 intake and getting american racing headers then I will take it in and get a proper dyno tune.

Too scared to mess with a cam / heads because of the emissions testing around here.

Gerco 05-21-2010 06:18 PM

183 MPH in a 81 RX7, Custom twin turbo. I know the exact speed cause I got a ticket and lost my license for 3 months due to it.

fatfoo 05-21-2010 06:26 PM

105 km/h.

howard 05-21-2010 06:30 PM

293 klm or 183 mph, on the autobahn, going down hill, red lined in 6th gear in a 911 s 4.

Vjo 05-21-2010 06:34 PM

130 mph.. 16y/o in the backseat of a 68 charger with a 440, trip deuces and a cam as well.

Myself, I drove a 67 Camaro with a 350 1970 LT1 new out of the crate, with headers, edelbrock hi-rise, 850 Hollie Double Pumper, full Cam, and 456 gears specially ordered for the ass end. Also had N50 Mickey Thompsons on the rear with keystones. :)

The only car to ever beat me was indeed a different 1968 Dodge Charger 440, Trip deuces, full cam, factory rear end.

I jumped him out of the hole as I always did but his power caught me through the mid and just nipped me at the quarter mile.

I could hear whoooooooooooooooooooo as those 3 desuces opened. :)

Memories. :) The early - mid 70's

PenisFace 05-21-2010 06:36 PM

One thing I noticed about driving really fast in a car, at least for me, is that you get into a state of almost hyper-focus. All your senses are hightened. Feels like your entire purpose of existence at that very moment in time is to be one with the car. I think if you are driving really fast and feel very unsafe, you need to focus harder!

I've also noticed that after doing 240k/150m, doing 110k/65m on the highway feels really slow now :error

LOL too loud.

my neighbors were cool with the LM2 on the car until I did the motor swap. that + pacesetter long tubes, ory pipe and no cats caused the car to sound like it does above.

there are a lot of emissions friendly camshafts on the market, I am not sure but I think the one in my car is CA friendly as well and it's roughly the same size as the Texas Giant cam, which is huge. I want to say Ed Curtis has some and another company that's slipping my mind.. the one that does the polluter cam also makes ones that will go through emissions fine.

Honestly it makes it a totally different car going the head/cam route. I have a stock Ls6 intake, big cam, stock heads, a lid and exhaust and that's pretty much my only "power" mods aside from the bottle. It makes for a very tame driver until you smash the loud pedal, then it's very, very violent.

Thats why I love having a turbo. Below 4000 it's sedate and slow, above that it hauls. When it ramps into boost, that kick in the ass feeling is great.

I might have missed it but what do you drive?

If I keep the car much longer the next step is to tear the motor down and put it back together with 8.5:1 compression, stick a couple of gt35r's low mounted where the fog lights should go and boost it until I'm afraid of it. With nitrous it should make 20psi where ever I set the stall at :)

An old r32 skyline. 2 liter straight six that absolutely howls :P If I hadn't lost my camera I'd go out and get some exhaust clips. Calling it loud is an understatement.

and I have no sound system in it :( Fuck long drives are hard as hell

Jon Oso 05-21-2010 06:56 PM

Half of my speakers have been blown out for a couple years at least. it's okay at moderate levels but anything with bass and it crackles bad. doesn't bother me at all because I enjoy listening to the car for the most part.

I like the Skylines. Not exactly the same thing but I'm looking to get into a four door car, either a IS300 that I will do a 2jz-gte swap with a single turbo or one of the generation before the current one STi wagons.

I am a nitrous junky though, every car I've owned has had a unit on it. Will be a huge transition going to a turbo set up but the camaro is just totally unpractical now as it gets about 9 mpg if I baby it around town and 12-14 on the freeway.

Honestly, turbo's blow away nitrous, imo. With nitrous, you always have to refill the bottle, where as the turbo is always filled, you just gotta give it some gas to "start spraying" :P

I was going to buy a bugeye WRX wagon and do an sti swap with a gt30r and shoot for 400hp, but nothing compares to rear wheel drive. I chose my gts-t over a gtr because squirming down the road in third gear with no traction makes you a badass :P

edit: If I'm hauling ass I can watch my gas needle moving downwards :P I think I get about 12mpg in the city, maybe 15 on the highway if I sit at 60mph.

I paid 600 bucks for my first nitrous kit for this car, about 200 for the one I replaced it with. Both were/are jetted for 150hp.

To do a complete turbo kit to add 150 extra HP it would cost me about 8k, plus the cost of rebuilding everything to handle the boost.

I'll stick to refilling bottles at 45 bucks a pop. even if I fill 100 bottles I'm still better off than doing a turbo kit LOL.

My car on the motor makes 414 RWHP, haven't sprayed on this set up but the stock motor made 446/509 (hp/tq) to the wheels on a 150 shot.

BigDeanEvans 05-21-2010 07:14 PM

190+ and my car shut down - 911 GT3

PenisFace 05-21-2010 07:18 PM

hmm, good point. My engine came turbo'd from the factory and can handle about 450whp fairly reliably before pistons start shooting out of places that they shouldn't be coming from. I think if I had an engine that started out naturally aspirated, I'd go with the nitrous route. Although with that, you don't get the neat turbo sounds :(

I drove around for a week once with no bypass valve, i blocked the flange off on the intake piping, and the recirculation tube between the maf and turbo. all I could hear was "gobble gobble gobble gobble", lol. sounded like this

DamnGoodRatio 05-21-2010 07:18 PM

Let's just say a "Funny Car" 1/4 mile track and leave it at that . . .
