Open source alternative to DreamWeaver?

Does anybody have a recommendation for a html editor similar to DreamWeaver?

CYF 05-20-2010 11:53 PM

mac or windows?

I like Coda on mac :thumbsup

mrwilson 05-20-2010 11:55 PM

I like Name WebEditor. It's not a free ware and not an open source, but it's VERY cheap and works for me better than DreamWeaver.

harvey 05-21-2010 12:33 AM

Notepad++? :thumbsup

candyflip 05-21-2010 05:44 AM

nVu is an open source WYSIWYG editor.

http://net2.com/nvu/

Way3 05-21-2010 05:54 AM

You can always check http://www.osalt.com/ to see if they have an open source alternative!
Best of Luck!

tunafox 05-21-2010 07:20 AM

Komposer looks like it's a fork of the nVu codebase.

Coda is pretty good if you use mac.

Amputate Your Head 05-21-2010 08:53 AM

I've yet to find anything that comes close to matching the functionality of DW.

hypedough 05-21-2010 09:02 AM

Coda is the shit, not free but worth the price.

fatfoo 05-21-2010 09:33 AM

You can use notepad to write html, or you can also use some online software that your host may provide for you to write html.

You really are useless.

I don't need Dreamweaver anymore, it's for beginners. I use Notepad ++, it's free and it has everything I need.

Really, no bullshit here, I used Dreamweaver very often once but less and less with the time and now I really don't need it.

just buy an older legit version of DW on ebay, you can get cs3 for dirt cheap on there..

Bird 05-21-2010 10:17 AM

Portable apps is all you need.

Almost a whole PC on a USB stick

Yeah, me too. I used to use Notepad back in 95 - 96 before there was anything else. But if you are doing production, you use Dreamweaver to get shit done.

Of course, when I feel like being a bad-ass, I code my pages using Amazon Kindle.

I tested DW and used it like 3 times in my whole life, and believe me you can do very heavy production without it. For me, it's just Photoshop, slice, do some fast code in Notepad++, open in FF with WebDeveloper Add-on for the last touches and that's it. The few times I used DW I got more errors and incompatibilities than real solutions. Even though I never used the latest versions (and I don't feel the need to), I really don't feel the need to use a decent yet NOT PERFECT tool when it's easier, faster (well, using macros, of course) and more efficient to do it right from the beginning.

btw, for really stupid WYSIWYG stuff, the best tool I've ever used was Netscape Composer 4.7. There are many programs still using layouts I "wireframed" in NS Composer many years ago :winkwink:

leg4 05-21-2010 11:25 PM

Kompozer or NVU

2012 05-21-2010 11:34 PM

what does dreavmeaver do? I like how it organizes files. I like the color coding stuff. I used to enjoy how the ftp thing worked but WinSCP is so much better. Adobe really doesn't understand what SFTP is?
It just organizes your files? If it's not doing that it must be writing your code for you? How is that anything to brag about?

martinsc 05-22-2010 01:19 AM

I love dreamweaver, but prefer notepad++ for small quick editing. :thumbsup
I don't think there is any open source editor that comes close to the set of features that dw has....

sojproductions 05-22-2010 01:23 AM

code view in dreamweaver is good for raw editing and all the extra features, search and replace, link checks and all those other basic tools just make life quick and easy.
