new macbook user got questions

Bought a late 2009 macbook last month. Bumped the ram to 4gig and changed the hard drive to a 7200 rpm 500 gig travelstar. It seems to be sluggish with firefox and seems to run warm. How would xp run on it with bootcamp ? Thanks

tony286 05-20-2010 10:09 PM

one more thing the trackpad it seems you have to hit it a couple times to get it click something. What am I doing wrong?

Amputate Your Head 05-20-2010 10:09 PM

Firefox is sluggish by itself. No surprise there.
Runs warm? How warm?

Why put XP on it? If you gotta do windows, put win 7 in there. :2 cents:

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2007/10/fastest-windows/

"The fastest Windows Vista notebook we’ve tested this year is a Mac. Try that again: The fastest Windows Vista notebook we’ve tested this year–or for that matter, ever–is a Mac. "

Why would you want to?

with my mbp... firefox runs SLOW for an hour or so after turning it out then it's nice and snappy.

I have some software that is pc only so if I have to use it. I just can use it in one place. Instead of turning on another machine.

then why don't you use virtualbox or something so you wouldn't have to reboot?

GTS Mark 05-20-2010 10:21 PM

Stop using firefox and use chrome

Prof. Woland 05-20-2010 10:25 PM

sure you need virtual machine
something like a virtualbox or vmware fusion

p.s. i think that firefox is sucks with windows too

the trackpad is one of those things it takes some time to get used to. I used a normal pc trackpad today and was swearing up and down because it didn't have the mac functionality ;-)

You guys gave me hope .I was thinking of selling it which was pissing mandy off.I downloaded chrome much faster.:) i will play around with it more.

Update Safari as well, its f'n fast on a Mac!

candyflip 05-21-2010 07:49 AM

My Macbook would run so hot my lap would be red after using it. As I used it more, it didn't get quite so hot.

quiet 05-21-2010 07:58 AM

my macbook doesn't get very hot at all... hmm. as far as browser's, i prefer safari.

fatfoo 05-21-2010 08:18 AM

You say mac is sluggish with firefox. Good luck.

Spankys Teens 05-21-2010 10:40 AM

I have 4 windows machines here but I bought me a mac book pro 17" a couple of months ago.
One of the laptops has gone to my three year old. I don't need pc's no more. One Mac is woth more to me than all the pc's I own.

Zango 05-21-2010 11:30 AM

My MBP runs very hot as well but I think that is normal. I don't have a problem otherwise with the heat.

Bootcamp is touchy. Sometimes an update to software or running something CCleaner will cash it to crash and take a while to reboot. I've seen this happen on 3 machines now. Still, it runs XP better than any windows machine I've ever had.

DamianJ 05-21-2010 11:57 AM

They are hot. They are laptops. By putting a 7200 drive in you are generating MUCH more heat. Heat that is wasn't designed to get rid of.

And FF is shit.

I would recommend trying webkit - fastest browser I've tried.

I have a SSD in mine. Nice and cool and dead silent. Investing in a SSD is worth every penny. :2 cents:
