Electrical Surge struck all my computer equipment

But thanks to my UPS unit I had bought 2.5 years ago (an APC), only the UPS itself got fried.

That unit (the XS900 model) cost me $125 2.5 years ago, and just saved a router, cable modem, 24 port gigabit switch, external HDD, $5k computer system, and two phones from all being fucked.

I just replaced it with the XS1300 model for $160 (I bought them both from Best Buy).

If you are at all serious about your business, I strongly suggest you get one. Remember, data backups are useless if they along with the original both get fried from an electrical surge.

P.S. Sorry Eric, I accidentally posted this in the Now Hiring forum the first time.

No computer of mine is plugged into an outlet!

Must have a UPS, it's a requirement... when I can afford it I'll buy a huge one for the utility room and pass my office and server room drops through it :D

I have a ups but we also have a hard wired household surge protector in our electrical box. Cost $1400 to have an electrician wire it in but it's cheap in comparison to replacing all of your electrical gear. We live in an area with lots of storms & lightning...better to be safer than sorry.

I use one of those power conditioning surge protectors.

I don't have a UPS, but I do have one of those lightning adapters in front of everything.
So hopefully it would blow the fuse if lightning ever struck.
I do however turn my computer and all other electrical equipment off if a storm is right above my house and if I am at home...

I'm in Australia so our power system will be different to yours (unless you're here).
Search Google for: hard wired surge protector
Though this page gives you an idea of what's available: http://www.surgeassure.com/

It is cheap enough to do offsite backups these days. Besides that I always keep one USB Drive unplugged in the closet just in case something like that happens.

Do you have something to protect from surges on your network cables? I am scared I am going to get hit by lightning and that the surge is going to go through all my cat 6 cables, it would fry everything from my computers to my xboxes and stereo equipment, since it is all connected. I have a underground network cable going to my garage, so that is why I am worried about that. Not sure how to isolate that cable, and the electricians around here are clueless.

Yes, this is exactly what my UPS saved me from. We had a nasty thunderstorm a few nights back, and when I woke up, my UPS was broken but all the computer equipment was fine. They typically have 4-5 sockets on the back of them that are battery backup AND surge protection, and 4-5 that are only battery backup.

Cool, I'll check it out even though I'm in Texas. :)

Offsite backups do not save you thousands when your high end computer gear gets fucked.

You have to take into account how the electricity would traverse your household to establish the legitimacy of your fear. If your house sustained a direct lightning strike and current entered your electrical system, that system is independent of your cabled network, excepting your router, which is plugged into the wall. As long as your router is also behind a surge protector/UPS, then you have nothing to worry about.

How do you know the UPS itself didn't just die? :)

We had a power outage a few days ago that killed one of my UPSs, but I think that's more due to a crappy design rather than it being a martyr... it's the second one to die during an outage. :helpme
