My outdoor giant backyard theater

Tonight we had our third showing of the outdoor theater. The screen is 16' x 9' and we have a full high end surround sound which sounds great due to the fact that the pool is surrounded by a 4-8' retaining wall. Sorta creates an amphitheater effect. http://lbbv.com/pool/index.html are some pics of the pool so you can see the walls I'm referring to.

We always start with cartoons at dusk to get everyone in the mood and ready for the main event

It's a blast to watch the old blockbusters on it. We watched Jurassic Park - which is a bit freakier when you can hear the night sounds from our woods

I got the idea from http://backyardtheater.com/.

Nice pictures, they don't build pools like out here. We dig, rebar, gunite, plaster fill her up.

Awesome job. My brother in law wants to build that same unit.

How long did it take to put it together. Looks great.

I built the screen frame and ran the wiring in one weekend, including soldering rca or banana plugs on the ends depending on the application. All the equipment (receiver/DVD/surrounds/etc) fits in a big plastic tub (soon to be replaced by a rubbermaid style cabinet) and is all prewired so I just plug in 1 power outlet, the 5 speaker wires and let 'er rip. Takes about 15 minutes to get everything set up.

We used blackout cloth (the fabric they put behind drapes to keep light out) for the screen and paid someone to sew it together.

Now I'm trying to talk myself into buying a big popcorn machine ;-)

I have a similar system in my theater room :) I picked my projector by telling the sales guy to turn the lights on in the room so I can see which projector will shine with external light coming into the room. I ended buying the 2nd to the top Sharp DLP HD projector and its in my theater room at about 26 feet from the screen on a 120" draper screen. There are some awesome finds sometimes at frys like http://www.frys.com/product/4712589?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG this is the one I have but you might like a different one.

strobi 05-16-2010 01:03 PM

Wow that's great! Great project to work on too... super :)

A friend of mine in FL used to sell all that stuff online and had a setup similar to that. Was great for MNF.

Thanks.

Our yard looked like a bomb went off in it during construction and we had to do a ton of landscaping, and of course, it ended up costing way more than we thought. Hell, the retaining wall alone was almost $10k, but the wall MAKES the pool very cozy and holds sound (music from the stereo speakers as well as the theater set up) very well.
