Some quitting Facebook as privacy concerns escalate..Are you one of them?

Do you guys care when they make privacy changes,
Looks like its getting a Deleting Wave according to CNN.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/05/13/f...acy/index.html

Tech blogs have asked whether a "Great Facebook Deactivation Wave" is about to take off, and have listed reasons people should ditch the popular site.

Meanwhile, there is a second set of concerns about how difficult it is to delete your Facebook account if and when you decide that's what you'd like to do.

Facebook says on its website that you can "deactivate" your account by following these steps:

"To deactivate your account, navigate to the 'Settings' tab on the Account Settings page," the site says. "Deactivation will remove your profile and content associated with your account from Facebook. In addition, users will not be able to search for you or view any of your information."

there is real delete option buried in their help

Amputate Your Head 05-14-2010 10:37 AM

I never joined any of those fucking sites to begin with. I'm in the clear. :)

sperbonzo 05-14-2010 10:40 AM

I have tightened everything down on my facebook profile. It's pretty much just a place to share photos and links with my friends at this point.

I just don't understand any of you dummies that put your pictures and life on the internet for anyone and everyone to see. It's a different generation, I guess.

TheDoc 05-14-2010 11:19 AM

Hate or love it... if in your profile details you put what you like, let's say you like old cars. Put various topics related old car shows, books, movie, etc... and you can stay up on events in your area as local shops/stores/cities, etc that advertise to you.

And you might find some other junk you like..

If you have that big of a privacy concern, lock your profile down (you can exclude friends, make it viewable to people you allow, etc) then don't add people you don't know as friends.

Tom_PM 05-14-2010 11:47 AM

I mentioned the other day that I'd just logged into facebook for the first time in many months and was pestered by a pop up forcing me to update privacy settings. So I went back in there and set them ALL to Old Settings. Then I went into my privacy settings menu's and set everything to "Only Me" that had the option available.

So I think my stuff is actually less visible than it was before. No more friends of friends bullshit, no sharing anything with any third parties. They can try to get something from my profile if they want. I think I put that my title was emperor and I was self employed and that I like watching tv. So I'll get myself ready to see ads for tv shows and tv shows on dvd, and books about emperor penguins and how to strike it rich working from home webinars.

Yeah, pretty much
I actually like that the ads are tailored to my interests...it's helped me find good deals on local restaurants and venues. I don't understand people who bitch about these kinds of things...they act like they are too smart to need an ad...like they are some limp-wristed illiterate if they, god forbid, click on an ad and find something of interest.

Face it, the second you put ANYTHING on the web, it's pretty much out there for all to see...privacy is pretty much gone anyways...

i left 5 months ago because the assholes indexed all my pics after i checked off that i didn't want that. i deleted everything in the account, changed the name, and walked away.

i still have a bunch of marketing ones for mainstream that i use to promote, but my personal one i got rid of.

Me neither. I still get people bothering me wanting to know my facebook that can't understand me having no interest in it though.

Get someone else to check what they can see of your profile and information, you may or may not get a nasty surprise.

L-Pink 05-14-2010 01:15 PM

I work down at the Pizza Pit
And I drive an old Hyundai
I still live with my mom and dad
I'm 5 foot 3 and overweight
I'm a scifi fanatic
A mild asthmatic
And I've never been to second base
But there's whole ?nother me
That you need to see
Go checkout MySpace

'Cause online I'm out in Hollywood
I'm 6 foot 5 and I look damn good
I drive a Maserati
I'm a black-belt in karate
And I love a good glass of wine
It turns girls on that I?m mysterious
I tell them I don't want nothing serious
'Cause even on a slow day
I could have a three way
Chat with two women at one time
I?m so much cooler online
So much cooler online

When I get home I kiss my mom
And she fixes me a snack
And I head down to my basement bedroom
And fire up my mac
In real life the only time I?ve ever even been to L.A
Is when I got the chance with the marching band
To play tuba in the Rose Parade

Online I live in Malibu
I pose for Calvin Klein, I've been in GQ
I'm single and I'm rich
And I've got a set of six pack abs that would blow your mind
It turns girls on that I?m mysterious
I tell them I don't want nothing serious
'Cause even on a slow day
I could have a three way
Chat with two women at one time
I?m so much cooler online
Yeah, I'm cooler online

When you got my kind of stats
It?s hard to get a date
Let alone a real girlfriend
But I grow another foot and I lose a bunch of weight
Every time I login

Online
I?m out in Hollywood
I?m 6 foot 5 and I look damn good
Even on a slow day
I could have a three way
Chat with two women at one time
I?m so much cooler online
Yeah, I?m cooler online
I?m so much cooler online
Yeah, I?m cooler online

Yeah, I?m cooler online

Yeah, I?ll see ya online

I'd never leave facebook with my fake sexy girl accounts. Guys will buy anything if a sexy girl spams the link.

Nikki_Licks 05-14-2010 01:19 PM

I saw a special this morning about facebook and this one woman said there are 44 places on the site to set privacy settings and it takes a while to find them...she was warning users of facebook to be very careful and to check through the entire site.

TheDoc 05-14-2010 01:20 PM

What you do is become friends with everyone you can in your local area... then when they say "see in a week we're headed to some place" you lookup the home address in the profile, then go .... mow the yard for them while they're gone. :thumbsup

Varius 05-14-2010 01:42 PM

The delete portion of that reminds me of the recent South Park episode regarding that :1orglaugh

I have an account I use from time to time, to keep in touch with old friends mostly.. pics are kept just for my friends/family.. never post anything too personal, so I'm not worried.

Jarmusch 05-14-2010 02:03 PM

Never registered there.. I guess I'm not one of them

Which is why I put my logo on all pics I upload anywhere.

Caligari 05-14-2010 02:14 PM

the rule: never put any correct info on facebook. maybe your name, thats it. i get idiot friends actually trying to engage in what should be private email correspondence via facebook. unbelievable. i have posted on facebook to never ever contact me via facebook, use my damn email!

it is pretty funny when my "birthday" rolls around though...heh
