Sure, it's .0025% of the traffic that people have, if that.

Can they afford to not have an iPhone, no. Before people can get into the pad market, they should already being doing mobile.

I get hit up quite often by other companies to test their mobile sites for them. And I do to be nice, but no way they should have an iPad before an iPhone.

CaptainHowdy 05-14-2010 08:48 AM

I don't even own a cellphone...

I can. I never leave my sofa and therefore never need a way to do something remotely. :)

candyflip 05-14-2010 08:51 AM

There are other tablets coming out as well. The iPad is not the be all and end all.

Android is picking up steam, and when people are able to buy Android based tablets with more memory and storage and actual USB ports...for half the price, THEN we'll really see tablets really take off.

This was the same thing everyone said about the iPhone.
After bending to the will of the masses, I got one. Had it for 2 years.
Now it sits behind the seat (I think) in my truck collecting dust.

Yeah, I can afford to not have one.

Jman 05-14-2010 10:06 AM

I guess if Apple decides to allow Porn apps then yes Ipad is needed for everyone but with what I am reading on the Android, I'll let the guys carrying murse and designers play with the Ipad and wait with the Android google tablet to come out. Right now I am looking at putting my iphone at rest and go with the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 next week.

Shap 05-14-2010 10:09 AM

Personally of course you can afford not to have one. As business owners I believe if you plan on being successful for years to come you have to have one.

One example... Design and usability is going from mouse based to touch based. You have to understand and get a feel for what that is like and how to build products that implement that.

Shap 05-14-2010 10:11 AM

If you want to be innovative you need to embrace and throw yourself into new technologies especially those that will be a growing trend, which the ipad clearly will be.

I work on a Wacom Cintiq all day. My main monitor is a touch screen. (with a digital pen) :)

You don't need to have an app on the ipad. Member's sites look bad ass on it. Watching porn is really killer on it.

IF the sites never went to flash, which most did.

A lot of that carries over from the iPhone, Touch, etc.

There is a whole different way to promote mobile. Even the language used, how many times have you seen "Tap Here" on a PC site?

That's exactly why I'm not about to jump on the pad bandwagon until all this Apple vs. Adobe drama plays out. Something is going to have to give.

Really? I personally think that's a mistake. With the tools available now you can show different tours, sites to people based on browser/os. So why lose that traffic?

fris 05-14-2010 11:47 AM

im gonna pick one up whenever it comes to canuckistan

xxxjay 05-14-2010 12:20 PM

Shap, I own Apple stock too. This is not how you rig the market to make the price go up!!

fuzebox 05-14-2010 12:26 PM

I'm pretty satisfied by just borrowing a friends to make sure the sites look fine on one.

MichaelP 05-14-2010 01:33 PM

I bought an IPAD while I was at PHX Forum.... Since we won't have these in Canada until end of May.. IF....

Have to say that I love it. won,t replace a laptop for the day to day, but, for many things like internet and some other stuff I simply love it :)

speaking of, is there a website that catalogs/lists all iphone apps?

Why 05-14-2010 04:45 PM

this thread confuses me.... why would i need an ipad? we know what works there and what doesnt. its a webkit browser that doesnt support flash, with a set resolution, not a lot of guesswork there.

Call me crazy but I like to experience sites the way the end user experiences them. It helps me better understand them and deliver a better product.

NaughtyRob 05-14-2010 05:17 PM

I very much doubt it since there are like 150,000 now.

fatfoo 05-14-2010 05:24 PM

I just don't see why the iPad has to be so essential.

mpahlca 05-14-2010 05:27 PM

I do need one too, but I think no one here should focus on them. I believe all of you should use flash video. Also I think no one should think about physical interaction with their sites not devices.

Shap just walk away with your ipad out onto the beach, and enjoy ;)

well, i be god damned, i can't surf that site in firefox, looks like you can only surf apps via the iphone. wow.

no wonder i hate apple. first was quicktime, next was buying a gift cert for itunes, which requires downloading that app.

amazing.

Honestly Shap, do you know everyone's business? How does an iPad make my business better when they're anti-adult? Sure I get the jist of your idea which is optimize for every platform. But at this point is the .003% of traffic really worth the money? Right now, no. I have major respect for you but I don't like when people act as if they're all-knowing.

Deej 05-14-2010 06:03 PM

I used to do touch screen intergrations both on imacs and on some of the very first flat screen moniters which came out made by NEC. We would rip the bezels off, modify them to take the glass touch screen which connected to the controller. This was about 8 years ago and the company went backrupt because there just was not enough intrest in them. I wonder if this is a just a passing fad as it was back then.

i have been spending more time rubbing my gf's clitoris...

i dont need no stinkin ipad to work on my "touch" :2 cents:

.

halfpint 05-14-2010 06:17 PM

Touch screen monitors are great for shops and comercial premissies. But they dont work very well in the normal everyday household as we found out. I think the only way they would work is if the monitor was flat like a book on a table other wise they are pretty useless when you spend half a day with your arm stuck up in the air. I personally dont see them becoming popular on household computers for a long time yet but on small mobile devices yes they will become more popular

Fbomb - BANNED FOR LIFE 05-14-2010 06:17 PM

useless shit.
I just ordered little averatec laptop from Office Max that will serve me better.

Zorgman 05-14-2010 06:28 PM

If you guys don't have them ready now, start working on them. Plan 6 months ahead and by the time you get there they should have some other tablets ready.
