What are you doing in mainstream?

I know a lot of people have mainstream projects on the go. What are your mainstream projects? If you don't want to mention the project let us know what type of project it is tangible product, service, etc.

We started our mainstream division last year and have been building it up. Nothing to show off yet. Working hard building up our backends. Our goal for our two main projects is to create a destination for surfers (I know, not an easy task).

I've made a lot of contacts in mainstream both VC guys and entrepreneurs that have done very well for themselves. One thing I've learned is everybody has ideas. The value comes in how you execute the idea. I know that sounds obvious but a lot of people feel their ideas are worth something. There are a lot of BAD ASS projects being worked on. No matter how amazing and unique you may think your idea it's probably not that unique so you need to really knock it out of the park. Don't sit back and rely on the idea to propel your success your execution is going to be the key.

There seem to be three areas mainstream investors and companies look for in terms of valuing a mainstream entity.
- technology you've built (often times they probably have a different use for it than you intended)
- user base
- revenue base
Revenue Base is the one most companies struggle with which is why companies that can fund themselves until they are profitable can really kill it. I met a start up this week that is really awesome imo but they are running low on $$$ and have had to change their focus and direction because of it.

Interested to hear your thoughts :winkwink:

CupCakes are a huge market. Where are you opening it up? Let me know I recently saw a local company do it to perfection and I can maybe give you some ideas.

I'm doing designs both mainstream and adult.. So, not much difference there. :)

Horny Dude 05-14-2010 08:20 AM

I jumped in to mainstream selling tickets through Stubhub and it just grew from there. Now I have 5+ sites all pushing concert, theater and sports tickets. Mostly all SEO traffic so the conversions are good.

One thing I always found hard in mainstream when I got into it was getting traffic. In porn you just built a gallery and submitted it to a TGP and bam you had traffic. There are no TGP's in mainstream.

FreeHugeMovies 05-14-2010 08:22 AM

It's all about EXECUTION.

I'm doing a mainstream project right now. Only a few grand invested to launch then will seek VC.

Friends of ours already have a shoppe, we'll just be "franchising" so to speak. They've got a large customer base already and there's demand for their product. As you can see from the photo above, they're amazing looking cupcakes and they taste just as good.

First shop opened in December and they are open only in the evening. To date, they've sold over 30,000 cupcakes at $3.50 a cupcake, with no advertising other than Facebook and only open at night. As someone who's owned a restaurant here in town, they've hit on something.

Since they can't manage scaling up on their own, they will focus on production and I'm going to open a few little spots to sell the cupcakes. I'm excited, to say the least.

dyna mo 05-14-2010 10:22 AM

i've created a cereal that delivers all the daily required nutrients in one meal- breakfast.

it's ~1/3 cup and has a perfect nutritional profile of carbs, proteins, fats, and anti-oxidents.

it's completely organic and raw made from grains, seeds, fruits and berries and also provides energy.

it's designed to replace the multi-vitamin, anti-oxident pills, etc. all delivered via nature's way- food.

currently working on packaging, website, marketing, etc. i believe it's a product that can be marketed via adult programs as well as mainstream online and mlm.

this all came as a result of my eating more healthy and trying to live a more preventative health type lifestyle

Not yet but I'd be open to it. It might work well on GayTube too you never know.

TheDoc 05-14-2010 11:41 AM

We are technology and revenue based, adult funded the mainstream. Now mainstream holds itself and is funding us.

I have tried all types of mainstream products and websites... No way I could remember the amount of products we have tested through PPC and Websites. We also have our own extremely unique products as well.

Mainstream isn't really that hard... it's just extremely different, but like adult it has a huge learning curve.

The hottest product/technology in the world doesn't move in mainstream without someone understanding how to reach the masses. Some of the best ideas and products in the world fail before they ever start simply because nobody knows how to market the product.

Once I'm up and running, I will definitely get some over to your offices.

PornMD 05-14-2010 12:06 PM

I sell domains mainstream. Adult domain sales make up maybe 10% of what I do if that. Besides that occasionally I develop mainstream sites too, but am looking to get more into that especially given the kinds of domains I've been able to add to the portfolio lately. Exact matching term domains that with some content and a bit of time would be shoo-ins for #1 rankings and little/no-work for nice income thereafter.

I've had ideas for grand sites before and still do...a lot of times when I get particular domains, I have a pretty strong idea about what would go on it. One of my somewhat recent bigger sales was ByYou.com...the price I had originally paid for it given I'm a domainer was way too much, but at the time I had the idea of getting another short brandable (the one I targeted at the time was Qool.com but turns out Sedo had erroneously put it into auction when it was no longer for sale, d'oh!) and building a site on it entirely by user vote/survey on what it should be, selection of colors/layouts, etc. Then doing it for another short brandable and so on until a network of sites "By You" were up, running, and popular. Then had a later idea of simply a social network on it given how the subdomains would rock (Videos.ByYou.com, Music.ByYou.com, Blogs.ByYou.com, etc.). I ultimately sold it for a nice profit at a time when I needed the sale.

It's easy to have the ideas, hard to bring reality into them and face what time/money/other resources are needed to make them happen, or worse yet, overcome obstacles like fucking developers flaking out or doing a shitty job, hence why I've stuck with what I'm good at for the most part - buying and reselling domains.

Quoted for truth. Every time I build a non-adult site it ends up failing, can never get the SEO traffic or the link trades... I've tried all sorts of "social media" traffic generation and never get anywhere.

I already know how to make money with adult, so my time is much better spent doing what I know. Someday maybe it'll click.

I have developped an online game. All in Flash and ActionScript programed.
I did it all by myself and it took 2 years to achieve.
It's working good allthough I should have written a multiplayer online game.

It is my next project :)

However our biggest venture in that arena cant cross over to Adult so not really a GFY conversation.

I am doing a ton of list building and speaking in mainstream. I have about 70 mainstream products and sites on the go. Everything from my personal blog to classified sites.

List building is unheard of on this side of the tracks. My advice if you are moving to mainstream is to embrace mailing early!
