You're right. I may very well have heard it in the 70's, but I do remember telling it to people in the early 80's.

Funny story actually -- Once, while working as hospital security back then, maybe '84 or thereabouts, I was walking down a ward and as I came upon the nursing station I heard a nurse telling this joke to 3 or 4 other nurses as they sat around doing their charting. I heard her say "Why do women rub their eyes in the morning?" and before she could say the punchline I said it as I passed by -- "Because they don't have balls to scratch"

The whole works of them broke out in mad laughter.

In fact much later I ended up getting busy with one of those nurses for a while. That joke got me laid.
